Monkey Man Lyrics

Ay ay ay, ay ay ay, tell you baby, you huggin' up the big monkey man (2x)
I've seen no sign of you, I've only heard that you huggin' up the big monkey man (2x)
Is not lie, is not lie, them a tell me, you huggin' up the big monkey man (2x)
Now I know that, now I understand, you turnin' a monkey on me (2x)

(repeat)

The other interpretations of this song here are wrong. Toots Hibbert explained it himself to an attractive reporter: "Well, 'Monkey Man' is all about a girl, a very good-looking girl like you. I fell in love with her, and then a monkey-looking man took her away from me -- but I thought she was in love with ME! The guy was ugly, and not good looking like me, ha ha!" You get it? She's hugging a big guy instead of Toots, and the dude looks like a monkey.

"Monkey Man" has nothing to do with bouncers.

"Monkey Man" DOES have something to do with late great producer Leslie Kong. He produced it! (If the song had been a putdown of Kong why would Kong put his money into releasing and promoting it? Think these things through, people!)

Defo in my top 10 of all time. "Monkey Man" is what they call bouncers in Jamaica. I'm sure we all share that burning hate for bouncers haha. By the way if you're on this page, well done for still listening to real music these days!

As far as I've always understood it is about bouncers.

I read somewhere that this was a jab at Leslie Kong, who was their producer. Can anyone elaborate on this?

It's only a jab to their ex-producer Leslie Kong. He was Chinese-jamaican.

They almost never saw him.
