Ooh

Each day through my window I watch her as she passes by
I say to myself, "You're such a lucky guy"
To have a girl like her is truly a dream come true
Out of all the fellows in the world, she belongs to me

But it was just my imagination
Runnin' away with me
It was just my imagination
Runnin' away with me

Ooh (soon)
Soon we'll be married and raise a family (oh yeah)
A cozy little home out in the country with two children, maybe three
I tell you I can visualize it all
This couldn't be a dream, far too real it all seems

But it was just my imagination, once again
Runnin' away with me
Tell you, it was just my imagination
Runnin' away with me

Every night on my knees I pray
Dear Lord, hear my plea
Don't ever let another take her love from me
Or I would surely die, hmm
(Her love is) Heavenly, when her arms enfold me
I hear a tender rhapsody
But in reality, she doesn't even know me

(Just my imagination) Once again
Runnin' away with me, oh
Tell you it was just my imagination
Runnin' away with me

I've never met her but I can't forget her
(Just my imagination) Ooh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Runnin' away with me, ooh
Just my imagination
Runnin' away with me

General CommentHow are there no comments on this song? It's great!

The meaning is obvious, he amires this girl and wishes he could be with her. He's always thinking about her and imagining what it would be like if she was his, but she doesn't even know him.

General CommentI agree with Plateau its obvious what the song means. I heard this in the bahamas with a guy i met there and he said how appropriate the song was for the moment. Didnt think it turn out fot us.. but the song tells it all. love it.

General CommentI think the final verse "but in reality, she doesn't even know me" could also be taken to mean that he is dreaming of love - in its purest sense - for that future someone he has yet to meet and experience those fantasies with. His dreams are focused on feelings of love throughout life, not necessarily with a particular person, especially given the spiritual nature of his yearnings made clear in the third verse.

Or these fantasies could even be sarcastic ruminations on the nature of love itself. That those perfect little moments only exist in our imaginations, and not in real life (or if they do, they're imagined, and something sinister is brewing in the background). Too cynical for The Temptations? Perhaps. Too cynical for late 60s/early 70s? Not at all.

General CommentI love the incidental line thrown into the last chorus, as the song is fading out: " I never met her but I can't forget her. " Pretty well sums it up.
