In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
My paper cat
Has covered my skin
In chews
My basement home
Has made me as cold
As ice
So meow meow ?
Meow meow meow miha
Meow meow meow
My island home
Is gonna be mine
Quite soon
Your concrete nest
Is spewing that filth
Again
So walk in, shivering
Paws dried up
From wandering
Meow meow meow meow
My glass-eyed pet
Is purring while blind
I'm blind
That sweet old man
Is gonna be your
Best friend
So wash your paws
Alley cat
Once you're dead
You can't come back
Meow meow meow meow
Meow meow meow meow
Has covered my skin
In chews
My basement home
Has made me as cold
As ice
So meow meow ?
Meow meow meow miha
Meow meow meow
My island home
Is gonna be mine
Quite soon
Your concrete nest
Is spewing that filth
Again
So walk in, shivering
Paws dried up
From wandering
Meow meow meow meow
My glass-eyed pet
Is purring while blind
I'm blind
That sweet old man
Is gonna be your
Best friend
So wash your paws
Alley cat
Once you're dead
You can't come back
Meow meow meow meow
Meow meow meow meow

@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
Magical

Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
i've read all these interpretations and there are some pretty great ones here. what i've conconcluded that it's meaning will vary depending on each person's experience.
i've been the wronged spouse. my husband was unhappy with how much our lives changed when we had our child. he felt he was missing out on all the fun that this new group of single "friends" was having - profuse drinking, hook-ups, etc. instead of communicating with me, he cheated with one of the girls in the group who was bound and determined to take him from me. she broke up with her boyfriend and did and said anything to get him (the skeleton key). when he got caught and ended the affair, he found out how much the girl really loved him. she trashed him to whoever would listen, etc. and reality set in.
so to me, this song is the sobering realization after the affair ended of what he had actually done. you can even take it line by line and apply it to the two women. "i did a horrible thing to my love" - the wife.
then, when the other girl has moved on and he sees how his selfishness affected the wife, the one who really loved him, he sees the other girl in a new light. "don't call me that...", "you're nothing special", etc.
it's a sad song but i really like it and can't stop listening to it. my story has a happy ending, though. time has passed and we have been able to work things through.
awesome song, Margot & the Nuclear So & So's.
@imho I think you got it exactly right. To me its obvious he's singing to one woman and about another. I'm not sure what exactly they're teaching kids as far as reading compression goes these days, but just the fact he uses both "she" and "you" in this song makes it blatantly obvious its more than one woman.

Maybe its just obvious to me because this song fits my life so perfectly. I've been that guy. My girlfriend and I lost our intimacy, and even our ability to communicate about it. I fell apart, and when another woman opened her arms to me, I jumped into them.

Eventually it became clear that I never really meant all that much to the other girl, She was basically just passing the time with me until she found who she really wanted, even though she claimed to love me.

By the time I realized my mistake, it was too late, and it caused harm to my relationship with my girlfriend that still hasn't been fixed.
