The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

This is a great song, but I don't really know what it means. Probably something about being angry or going crazy.
Apparently he takes a look over his life and sees that he's lived a life of shame and guilt, and now he's gone so insane that he has a totally warped view of reality.
The vocal delivery, music, and some of the lyrics lead me to believe that the song is about someone that is so beaten down, they don't care about anything anymore

I think this song is about a guy who has kinda screwed over a lot of people in his life, and given them much pain. This guy has gotten so far into madness, and he's just seen what he's done to everyone. Looking back at this, he feels like he's been punched, and he feels remorse, anger, pissed off at himself. He had been "obliterating them" with his life's madness, and he's pissed at himself.
its a song about a man making an "empire" as a dictator. its like he bullied and bullied everyone and then one man makes a stand for freedom and then the man "obliterates" him and he walks his way to hell cuz he went to far by killing the man
