My Favourite Dress Lyrics
I know how you both feel,
The heart can rule the head,
Jealousy is an essential part of love,
The hurting here below,
And the emptiness above,
There's always something left behind,
Never mind,
Oh never mind,
I can't still be drunk at five
Oh, I guess I surely can
Slowly your beauty is eaten away
By the sense of someone else
In the blanket where we lay
There's always something left behind
Maybe next time
A lonely star
A welcome ride in a neighbour's car
A long walk home
In the pouring rain
I fell asleep when you never came
Some rare delight in Manchester town
It took six hours before you let me down
To see it all in a drunken kiss
A stranger's hand on my favourite dress
That was my favourite dress

One of the best songs ever about how a bloke feels when his girlfriend goes off with someone else... David Lewis Gedge isn't ashamed to be absolutely honest, he doesn't hold back anything... So many Manchester song writers write about pain, but most seem to put a slant om it that it really doesn't hurt or bother them anymore... He doesn't and this song is all the more poignant for it...
I agree, DL Gedge is all of that except that - being from Leeds - he would blanch at the thought of someone thinking that he was from Manchester. The rivalry between the two cities is legendary and dates back to the 15th C and the war of the roses. The Houses of Lancaster (red rose) and Yorkshire (white rose) now only seem to do battle on a football field where both teams still wear their respective colours. To someone from Leeds/Yorkshire any delight experienced in manchester would be regarded as rare.

he certainly writes a lot about "how a bloke feels when his girlfriend goes off with someone else" but he does a damn good job
