"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Twice as arrogant as I am talented,
inspiration has been dilluted.
I'm dependent on this solution.
Thank you Tennessee for your contribution.
Keep conspiring towards my reduction.
There's a nervous breakdown building beneath
this calm exterior but no one seems to notice.
Not exactly a charismatic speaker with rising demand.
I just get buried deeper.
I think it's time I let you know
that my rope ended miles ago.
When progression bottoms out
you must consider another route.
Anthematic patrons that practice masked identity
for the socially anxious stopt his acting.
I'd rather navigate the peaks and valleys of uncharted headpace.

“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
Fran didn't write didn't all of lyrics to this album, he wrote MOST of the lyrics to this album. You can see on certain songs where it's evident Fran has ghostwritten for Ben. The fact the poster above me claims Ben would be so ignorant, shows me he is not a real fan of they're work, so I will disregard what he/she has said, just wanna set things straight for people viewing.
This song is obviously about Ben's writers block, and is quite sad in fact, so to see that great poet's inkwell has run dry.
Actually, Francis has stated on multiple occasions that he wrote literally all of the lyrics to this album. Ben didn't do anything and didn't even show up to practices while they were writing the album. Get your shit together, pal.
