The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

It is a song about war or any sort of conflict, but I never put in modern perspective before. I always had the images of something more Mediaeval in mind. Yours makes more sense though since the the conflict America's involved is probably what inspired them to write it. Class song though, very epic!
I love the images this song cascades through my head. I see a man and a woman, screwing over the world for their own gain. Then I see everyone else in the world, men, women, even children, banding together aginst this new threat. They don't really expect the human race to survive, but there's nothing else they can do.

Now isn't that the most typical American answer? There are other countries who feel much worse pain than just
gah, I got cut off. Anyway as I was saying, America is not the only counrty to feel pain. Perhaps you should walk a few paces away from your own doortep, then you may understand the world a little better. This song was NOT written to underly the suffering of ONE country, least of all America.
