"Clap Your Hands!" as written by and Julian Casablancas....
Run the lip off sunshine shore
Betray white water, delay dark forms
Slap young waves on wooden bones
Don't touch the laughter and away we go

Away we go (and away we go)
Away we go (away we go)
Away we go (and away we go)
Away we go (away)

Clap your hands!
But I feel so lonely
Clap your hands!
But it won't do nothing
Just clap your hands!
But I have no money
Just clap your hands!
But it don't seem like me
Yeah clap your hands!
Are you up to something?
Clap your hands!
Where's my milk and honey?
Just clap your hands!
But I just look funny
And clap your hands!
I'll just wait awhile

As time alone stands still for some
Stuffed sailor up, up with eyeball sun
And if by castle ship should stray
It has like you no chosen fate
For it's tongue-tied caboose that leads this ragged lad
This finger-flipping mom and dad
For what is worth some aimless steer
And should not confuse my foggy mirror
Reveal what is not there
I shall take this unbound train and flow away...

My InterpretationI’d say this song is about capitalism, the ring leader (corporation) is demanding that everyone just keeps playing along with the system; the minority is refusing but eventually he’s silenced by the masses.

I think this because of the line ‘where’s my milk and honey’ which references the children’s rhyme in which the owl and the pussycat sailed off with milk and honey wrapped up in a ten pound note. The minority realises they’re being coerced and stolen from, he realises that all this clapping along (buying products) isn’t helping with his loneliness, he realises that he’s been left distribute, but can do nothing about it.

(I created an account just to write this because no one had brought up the ‘milk and honey’ line yet).

General CommentEvery time I hear this song it feels as if I'm in a giant circus tent, haha. The mid-section is the best, with the ringleader enthusiastically encouraging everyone to "CLAP YOUR HANDS!!!", but we have this one guy who is trying to change the subject and make every excuse not to, ending with a line that trails off as he is probably turning to walk away: "I'll just wait....awhile..."

    Fun.

General Commentthe song structure seems to be a captain and his crew, though the lyrics are those of a crewmember embarking on a "grand" voyage, heart-of-darkness style
