The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
And we feel like rain,
When the words all sound the same,
In the lifeless corners of this empty frame.
Though we feel let down,
By the same old autumn breathing.
Winter's curse is just around the bend.
With our hands all tied,
To the blades of their design.
We are armed and ready to commit this crime.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
The way we've been for far too long.
From the falsest smile,
To the fear of death is why
The pain reminds us that we're still alive.
With our hopes on hold,
And our lack of interest exposed,
All hands damage our determined eyes.
But the lines are drawn,
And the red begins to creep
Its way from boredom toward apathy.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
The way we've been for far too long.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
The way we've been for far too long.
Say something, finally we're alone.
Alright is there anyone out there at all?
Say something finally we're alone.
How about a phone call now?
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are,
The way we've been for far too long.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are,
The way we've been for far too long.
We love that game but we never play
Cause we will lose and we want to stay
The way we are
And we feel like rain,
When the words all sound the same.
As the curtain closes on another day
When the words all sound the same,
In the lifeless corners of this empty frame.
Though we feel let down,

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Just A Little Lovin'

Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
In my opinion, this song is about the game of life. So many people are afraid to create their own futures and live a life of freedom. Most people don't take chances because they are afraid of failing and/or succeeding. On top of that, people tend to find a comfort zone and stick with it. It's easy to think about the past, how it used to be, and wish it was that way again. The hardest part is playing the game, but you'll never win if you don't take action.
Ding ding ding! I think c0unt3rfeit got it. I was about to say something very similar. There's no way (aside from an explicit explanation by the writer) to know exactly what the song was written about. But I think this is the most logical inference.

If you look closely and think about it, the theme is a cynical view that life becomes monotonous after a while. And the risks of making a change (going after hopes and dreams) aren't worth it because, well, change isn't desired (don't want to "grow up") and is a scary thing.

So that's what I think. The song is about the game of life. But "that game" he is talking about...might refer to something different. That's where the song might become more personal. But as far as the casual listener is concerned, that's the closest thing to what the song is "about." Anyone vehemently disagree?
it's

It sounds to me like the writer is in kind of a depression. He goes through life day by day in a kind of haze. From fake smiles to the fear of death to just everything a blur of the same and feeling alone that much seems pretty clear. Theres a lot of references to cutting: With our hands all tied,
To the blades of their design,
We are armed and ready to commit this crime

and

But the lines are drawn,
and the red begins to creep
its way from boredom toward apathy.

I dont think this is specifically refering to cutting but really any self harming thing (physically or emotionally) people do to ease the pain of their day to day life.

As for the chorus, its talking about trying to break out of it, trying something different, but they never do because everytime they try (or "play") they always end up back where they started or even worse so they think it might just be better to stay the way they are and not do anything.
not sure about this but:
We love that game, but we never play 'Cause we will lose and we wanna stay The way we are, the way we've been For far too long
this made it sound kind of like a song about two people who liked each other but knew they wouldnt work out, so they didnt push the relationship because they dont want to ruin it
but i deffinatly think the song is deeper than just that
I'm almost sure that this song is about them getting tired of being what everyone else wants them to be, what they were designed to be.
With our hands all tied, To the blades of their design,
Means that they are tied down to what everyone wants them to be, and that they have to be that day after day.
Oh, and that's also why they feel like rain, because rain just does the same thing over and over again.
PS, this song rocks out loud.
Justin's lyrics are so smart and so beautiful. I think that it's about two people in a relationship who are forced to be what everyone thinks they should be and they're bored with it but at the same time they don't want to change the way they are at the moment. MOTION CITY SOUNDTRACK ROCKS!!!!
I see it as them being in a relationship that they feel isn't working but they're more afraid to go out and try something different than they are to be stuck with something mediocre.
"And we feel like rain, When the words all sound the same, In the lifeless corners of this empty frame"
Things are hitting me. But everything is just the same as it's always been. I can't stand it
"Though we feel let down, On the table, hard of breathing, Winter's curse is just around the bend"
Thought it feels like things will never change, it can get cold..worse
"With our hands all tied, To the blades of their design, We are armed and ready to commit this crime"
Those lines are deffinetly about cutting the emtiness makes then want to feel, so they prepare
"We love that game, but we never play 'Cause we will lose and we wanna stay The way we are, the way we've been For far too long"
We can't give up on what we know. Won't take chances, no matter how much we might love to. Because we're afraid of change. even though we never had anything in the first place.
"From the falsest smile, To the fear of death is why, The pain reminds us that we're still alive"
Cutting again. The pain they inflict on themeselvs tells then they are alive. That they can feel. They arn't void of all emotions.
"With our hopes on hold, And our lack of interest exposed, All hands damage our determined eyes."
We've lost all we've wanted. given up on hope. Stopped caring. Nothing helps, every attempt leaves us further damadged.
"With the lines all drawn, And the red begins to creep, It's way from boredom twards apathy"
Again...cutting. The cutts are starting to bleed. Because apathy has replaced empathy.
"Say something" " finally we're alone" "Alright" " is there anyone out there at all?" "Say something" " finally we're alone" "How 'bout a phone call now?""
this is a conversation. The two apathetic lovers who had given up on hope and are afraid of change feel they are alone together in this pain they feel. They search for support in eachother
"We love that game but we never play 'Cause we will lose and we wanna stay The way we are?"
And we still dont' want to change it. It's to scary a though
"And we feel like rain, When the words all sound the same, As the curtain closes on another day "
And it never changes...every day remains the same.
As much as it pains me to see it, I think you're right about the cutting. Even the "rain" strikes me as a blood analogy now.
And in that case, the chorus probably refers to him having a history of cutting and the ultimate realization that it could end badly which caused him to stop, even though the urges keep coming.
