Quiet now, your voice seems miles away
Yet somehow, I hear your song resound
A little bit softer each day
And from my tired heart, a little bit farther away
Ill sing along
The whole day through
Just do your best to hear me
Its all you can do
You have my attention
Like youve had all the while
Since that first day when you made my heart smile
With loving eyes and tired sighs that flow
You have my attention
Like a shout through an empty sanctuary
Speak but a whisper
Ill hear a sermon
Ill sing along, the whole day through
Just do your best to hear me
Its all you can do
Ill sing along, the whole night through
While you sleep safely
Ill be thinking about you
You have my attention

This song is about a boy letting a girl know that he sees her. That she has his attention. Maybe they were friends first, and he's now noticing that she wants to be more. She isn't straightforward about it, but he knows something's different about their relationship.

When it says "Speak but a whisper, I’ll hear a sermon" he's meaning that he sees the little hints she's putting out there. Maybe OVER-analyzing things?

"Just do your best to hear me, It’s all you can do. I’ll sing along, the whole night through" Mabye her only way of knowing he feels the same is to pick up on little clues because he too is not being straightforward about his feelings.

"Quiet now, your voice seems miles away, Yet somehow, I hear your song resound A little bit softer each day" Could it be that this is him telling her that he's noticing little by little that she's different in the way she acts around him? She's becoming someone else to him so the "old" her is fading away?

This song is about those times when you've walked away from God and he calls you back everytime with such suttle things. "Like a shout through an empty sanctuary Speak but a whisper, I’ll hear a sermon" It's so beautiful.

It's interesting that few people acknowledge (in any discussion of their lyrics) that the subject is most likely about God. Being as they are a Christian band. Now this is not saying that they exclusively sing about God, and that even the song probably has duel meanings... but it's not all about relationships, in the boyfriend girlfriend sense. In fact I bet it's less about the latter, and more about God.

    Just a thought.

This song is about God and how the singer is letting him know that God has his attention. And how you can fall short from God feeling like you can't hear Him anymore, but he hears His song resound, and He speaks but a whisper. Beautiful song.

When Aaron sings "I hear your song resound" I actually get shivers down my back.

I get the impression that it's about two people who broke up, but the guy still wants to stay a part of the girl's life, and wants to show her that he still cares.. Idk, maybe it's just me. A hope of getting back together, too? Idk, maybe he's just on a trip and misses her a lot.

there are 3 songs on "In Motion" that were originally cuts from Beneathe Medicine Tree" that never made it onto the record. I think this is one of them. I think it expresses Aarron's love for his Girlfriend and how he will always be there for her, not matter what! It's a beautiful song! I'm having this played at my future wedding.

i dont think he's on a trip, i think that he continues to think about her even when she's not awake. she has his attention so much, that he dreams about her. these lyrics are on my desktop background :]

Holiday
Bee Gees
@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday". I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
