I'm needing lest restraint before
I'm needing to hit the lights and close the door
I'm fine, I'm fine cause I'm

Dripping in this strange design
None is yours and far less mine
Hold the wheel, read the sign
Keep the tires off the line
Just relax, you're doing fine
Swimming in this real thing I call life
Can I bring a few companions on this ride?

I'm feeling, my heart's not beating anymore
I'm feeling. it's alright, this happened once before
I'm fine, I'm fine cause I'm

General CommentSome things are not meant to be explained in words. I think when we hear this song we understand what it means. It is about life, but I think it is pointing at something I cannot describe.

General Comment65 Phish shows and 13 years later, I just found out that it's "real thing" and not "river". Too bad, I like river better.

Again, I like to think Trey is talking to us, the crowd.
Could be just about life, like Guyute said.
Life is tough, but your doin fine.

I also think it could have to do with a bad acid trip.
    Just hold on...
    it's happened before...
just try to relax and enjoy.

    Hey you never know.

General Commentyea, this is song they play to give a nod to a show that's basically slanted toward psychedelics. "Tripping" and Dripping is the type of lyrics they do to allow you to take what you will from the song. To me bumping it in before or after an epic jam in one of their shows let's you know that they understand what you just went through or are about to go through and it's reminding you to keep cool stay in control and enjoy the ride with some friends. A good example of this is Orlando 11/14/1995. They play it right after Stash>Manteca>Stash>Dog Faced Boy>Stash. Listen to that whole second set and then it will make sense.

General CommentTrey explained the song in 2010 in a solo show. Its about the strange feeling he got when he was about to become a dad for the first time. Its about not knowing what the hell he was doing and just trying his best to keep the car on the road and be the best dad he could, one day at a time. This song speaks to me hard. All of us dads know that feeling. How the hell are we going to do this? hold the wheel, read the signs, keep the tires off the lines, just relax, youre doing fine, swimming in this real thing, i call life. Can i bringggg a few companions on this ride.
