"Don't Believe A Word" as written by and Philip Parris Lynott....
Don't believe me if I tell you
Not a word of this is true
Don't believe me if I tell you
Especially if I tell you that I'm in love with you

Don't believe me if I tell you
That I wrote this song for you
There might be some other silly pretty girl
I'm singing it to

Don't believe a word
For words are only spoken
Your heart is like a promise
Made to be broken

Don't believe a word
Words can tell lies
And lies are no comfort
When there's tear in your eyes

Don't believe me if I tell you
Not a word of this is true
Don't believe me if I tell you
Especially if I tell you that I'm in love with you

Don't believe a word

General CommentGary Moore's voice is filled with such emotion in this. Some of the lyrics are really good, like "a heart is like a promise made to be broken" and "lies are no comfort when there's tears in your eyes".

The best part has to be when Moore sings in the last verse "Don't believe me.....", it's just great. The live in Dublin version is great too. I have it on DVD.

General CommentI think the lyrics in this song are amazing, much more deep than most music of the day.

"Don't believe a word, for words are so easily spoken", what a great powerful line that is.

General CommentI'm gonna have to disagree with Burtonite. It's perfectly possible that you could be right, in fact you probably are. I just see it differently.

This song sounds extremely sarcastic to me. It sounds like Phil poured out his heart to a girl, but she turned away because she didn't believe him. He is completely broken, and wonders why in the world she wouldn't believe what he said.

    "Don't believe a word
For words are so easily spoken
Your heart is like a promise
    Made to be broken"

He's angry here, but he's covering his anger up with sarcasm. Like, "Of course, that's what I meant. I never really liked you. I just liked hurting you." He can't understand why she doesn't see that he doesn't mean to hurt her.

General CommentChrist, these interpretations are practically useless. Come on guys!
Lynott is being straightforward and telling the truth about musicians on the road. Sure, there may be songs that are sincerely written for one individual and that individual alone, but there are many many songs that are just written to get the ladies. This song says it straight-up.

"Don't believe me if I tell you
That I wrote this song for you
There might be some other silly pretty girl
    I'm singing it to"
