A firm kick in the pants
This last chance to get things right
This was one time I closed an eye
Looked away from you
Look out for yourself tonight
Sometimes I have to get things right
I never meant what I said to you
To give up all the things that you love to do
I'd never guess that you'd do me wrong
I'll never accept that dance and song
A little time to adjust
Would be just what we need
I've meant to tell you what I think that you think
When I cross your mind
Forgone
Stressed at the light
Whats wrong with being uptight
I never say what I intend to
But does it mean that much to you
I'd a close call with a glitch in time
Are you really that happy to be mine
No I'm not disguising
All that fighting
And dreams not coming true
I will play some light from the sun
The world by my side
I will see dawn as a forlorn maiden in the sky
And I will play a song of thunder you may recognize
You make a never
Thats forever
Knowing what you deny
When I revisit the past its a blast
I've just gotta move on
I've just let down someone I relied on
And I dont see why
How did we pretty up that speech
M C talking through me
I've never done what I set out to do
Don't come to me 'cuz I'll run from you
Left out of life
Would I really care
Not a whole lot
There's nothing for me there
I'll never forget the limits that we set
Back when it was a moon
I never made a pretence of living with good sence
It's really not my strong suit

General Commentprobably my favorite line: "I never say what I intend to
But does it mean that much to you"

I think John fit a whole bunch of thoughts, feelings, and idea into this short quote. I felt like I understood what he was getting at with that; maybe its not complex and everyone understands what he's saying there - which is fine. Either way, I appreciate that it was in the song.

General CommentBy the line, "I never say what I intend to
But does it mean that much to you", I think John means that the person John is talking about in the song does not or cannot understand/appreciate what John "intends to say - but never does."

I know the feeling of never telling someone what you intend to, perhaps because you're nervous or scared - but its the act of preparing to tell someone something and then eventually keeping it to yourself (I would think that most people have done this.)

So I was saying above that I appreciate that John put that in the song because I think it literalized a strong feeling/idea that I know I've experienced.

General Commentwell i thought it was pretty obvious. john has lost someone who he'd cared forbecause he screwed up something, perhaps something stupid, or it could've been just plain misunderstanding.
anyway, that's what came to my mind after i've heard the song for the first time

General Commentit kind of shows his understanding of peole in a spirtual kind of way. i havent heard the song in ages as someone else has my cd but it could be that john has lost a part of himself and he dosent know how or why but feels something diffrent

General CommentThis is possibly my favourite JF song. I have to agree with some of the comments that have been posted previously in relation to wanting to tell someone something but you never get around to it. I think John's exploration of this idea may be broader than just this. It seems to me that the main idea of the song is to send the message that some people try to be too perfect, i.e. perfectionists or even people who are obsessive-compulsive. The line "sometimes I have to get things right" comes to mind here. The line following this one, "I never meant what I said to you" might have something to do with him wanting to say something important, but then backing out by saying something unimportant. He also says, "I never say what I intend to".

I think "A firm kick in the pants" is what you need so that you are reminded to say that important thing, rather than 'prettying up your speech' (i.e. just say whatever you need to say in its raw form).
