First and Ellen Lyrics

is it wrong to want to walk away when every day of your life looks like today and today looks like a rotting lifeless gray? i don't know where things went wrong with me...but i feel like i’ve become a timid shadow of the person i’ve always wanted to be. and i've been thinking about my past today...thinking of all those times i was afraid...and all those times that i felt worthless and ashamed. i know, i thought i was strong. i said i would never change...but that burning house left me an empty frame...and no longer can i decay...no longer can i keep my heart locked away. have you ever felt like you are wasting your whole life searching for something you can't find? there's been so much talk of so many slashed up wrists...but we're much too young to be dwelling on thoughts like this. so scrape your heart up from the bottom of the bottom of the barrel. keep your faith in the path that's growing narrow. kill the doubt inside your head. we overcome. we push ahead.

Just think about looking at your own burning house. That would leave you with that empty frame and thats how he fells it seems like. This song along with all their songs are off the charts.

This is great song, the lyrics, like many of MLIW's lyrics are a bit "oh woe is me", but at the end of the song, it seems like he has overcome the adversity, as he finds a way to "overcome" and "push ahead". fucking great track.

I've seen these guys live twice, and I saw a huge scar on the arm of Jeffrey (vocalist). Possible that he tried to commit suicide? This sounds like it could be about that: how he feels bad over everything he cannot be, then there 'slashed-up wrists' bit, then eventually overcoming this all and overwinning the urges to commit suicide? Wild guess...let me know

I think this is a reflection. I think one of his big "motos" is for self truth and this is what this song is about. Its about a guy who looks back on his life, and sees that hes lived a life that was hollow, and just wasnt worth living really (rotting lifeless gray). This is just about him seeing that he wasnt living a good life, now is gonna change and be something good.

I agree with a lot of what others have said. To me, Jeff is really tired of seeing everyone turning their thoughts to death, and seeing everyone feel so empty, including himself, so this is his rally cry to pick up your hearts and just make it through. WE OVERCOME. WE PUSH AHEAD.
