My name is Vernon James and I live to the south of town
I work my window watching the women go round and round
Some people come here for love
Some people come for fantasy
When two in the morning comes around
My baby comes around for me

Someone come, come my someone
Take the clouds from my eyes, the one
I know that sometime soon
One day, we'll walk in the sun

I'm taking tickets and watching the men always looking down
Sometimes I feel like an animal in the zoo staring out
No one looks me in the eye
They save it for the girls inside
I don't care much what they see
I know she saves it all for me

Someone come, come my someone
Take the clouds form my eyes, my one
I know that sometime soon
One day we'll walk in the sun

Some people come here for love
Some come for curiosity
I know there will be a day
I know we'll figure out a way

Someone come, come my someone
Take the clouds from my eyes, my one
I know that sometime soon
One day we'll walk in the sun

Song Meaning“I wanted this song to be about a guy who works in a strip joint, and his girlfriend’s one of the strippers. Comes from our old days playing bachelor parties backing up strippers. And sometimes the stripper’s boyfriend would be there. Sort of acting like her manager and making sure that nobody messed with her. And also to collect the money at the end of the night.” (Bruce Hornsby on "Walk in the Sun")

General CommentIt just hit me the other day what a dark song this is. The dude in the song works as a cashier at a strip club/brothel, and he's trying to find love. Not what I'd expect from a song called "Walk in the Sun," haha. Bruce Hornsby is very good at this, disguising dark lyrics/stories in upbeat tunes.

General Commenti think it's talking about how the cashier already has a relationship with one of the dancers ("My baby comes home for me" and "I know she saves it all for me"), but because of social pressure they can't be open about it. he has hope, though, that maybe one day they can walk in the sun, ie out in public together. just a thought...

General CommentI don't think the guy in the song really has a relationship with this chick.

He wishes he did, but he's only a ticket-taker. Ain't happening. So he dreams about it and you hear about it in the song.
