I will sing to you of greater things
Money, gold, and diamond rings
Just don't make it last any longer than it has to
Stories of the greater years
Fill your heart and soul with cheer
Just don't make it last any longer than it has to

I will sing to you of greater things
Money! Gold! And diamond rings
Just don't make it last any longer than it has to
Stories of the greater years
What's in here wont disappear
Just don't make it last any longer than it has to

OK, I too signed up just to comment on this song. I use this site all the time for lyrics and song meanings, so I'm glad I finally got around to doing it so I can comment too.

To me this song seems like he's totally into this girl but he realizes the relationship might not be working. He is insecure about the relationship/feels the end is coming but things arent what they used to be (stories of the greater years). He wants to hang onto this relationship and those memories forever but he acknowledges things arent working and doesn't want her to stick around just so she doesnt hurt him. He is basically admitting he would be there for her forever so if she wants to be done with it, shes gonna have to do it, not him, he will continue to love and sing to her of greater things for all of time.

i dont know, i'm still drunk from last night

One of the most beautiful and relaxed songs I've ever listened to. I'm not sure what its about, reads like the start of a bedtime story or something.

signed up to write my thoughts on this song... Both my wife and I have been fortunate to see these guys live... they are incredible...

My wife is now pregnant with our first child and this is on our "baby's playlist" and it's perfect... while the song plays like a lullaby... the "Just don't make it last any longer than it has to" makes this perfect for an expectant mother... My wife is in her third trimester now and she has to agree with this statement whole heartedly... If anything this song is a lullaby to the baby in the womb... and the hallow echos playing throughout the song give the acoustics of what sound might sound like in the womb as well... great song!

"Stories of the greater years... Fill your heart and soul with tears"

Is it actually the word tears and not the word beer. I have seen it written both ways. Beer doesn't make too much sense (unless you use the beer to drown your past). Fear works, but I haven't seen that used by any lyrics places. Most the lyrics places I have seen have it written beer and then tears is written in parenthesis. Anyone got any insight on this at all?

On the Okonokos live album the lyric is "Stories of the greater years.. Fill your heart and soul with cheer" I would assume that it's the same lyric on other versions, anyways this song and this band are from Heaven! I love the music.

i absolutely love the whole idea of this song

but what i think is kind of funny, is the whole "just don't make it last any longer than it has to"... and then the song is 9:18. hahaha. okay no, it's not at all too long, it's perfect and they should always just jam, but it's a funny idea. they're totally drawing it out.

i see them live in 3 days squee.

Sounds like SpiritThumb summed it up pretty well, nicely done. If this description is accurate then in that line "Stories of the greater years fill your heart and soul with cheer/tears" I think either makes a fair amount of sense. Cheers in the case of nostalgia in the good ol' days and tears if the relationship is soon to end. Regardless, good song...

I think this song is talking about feeling sad when thinking about things you can't have like diamonds and gold or memories of old that you can't have back. Basically it's okay to go there, to a place of sadness, to go through it but just don't make it last any longer than it has to. Come back to the present or to reality and live your life now is what I think it is saying.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Blue
Ed Sheeran
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.
