This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.

It seems the difference between the versions is that "Luftballons" is more timeless in that it could have been any place any time that the story happens. "Red Balloons" however is geared towards the fears of the western world in the early 80\'s. Those of us who don\'t know German considered it another anti- Nuclear War song of which there were many during that time.\n\nHaving learned only the "Red Balloons" version, I always thought the final balloon is the 100th balloon that was supposed to be sent out with the others but somehow was forgotten and left behind. Later she finds it and lets it fly in memory of the friend she lost.
