"This is how it goes" as written by and Missy Higgins....
Suddenly I can't stay in this room.
You'll never sway, and I have nothing left that I can think of to say.
What do you want me to think of my thought?
Bear it in mind, if I cannot believe in me who will I then be?

And so I'll run but not too far, in case you chase me, oh
But this is how it goes, baby.
I'll get angry at your words and I'll go home
And you won't call after me 'cause I'll be back before you know, you know

So give me a tooth full of that smile,
And know-it-all eyes you show me
Just to prove that you don't need to lose it.
You tell me I'm your fortress of desire
But is it a crime for me to say my own view
And want then not to fear you?

And so I'll run but not too far, in case you chase me
But this is how it goes, baby,
I'll get angry at your words and I'll go home
Then you won't call after me 'cause I'll be back before you know,
You know, yeah I'll be back before you know

La di da di da
And so I'll run but not too far

'Cause this is how it goes, baby,
I'll get angry at your words and
I'll go home, then you won't call after me,
'Cause I'll be back before you know, you know

Yeah, I'll be back before you know
And so I'll run but not too far

General Commentthis is my favorite missy higgins song, its more fun and bouncy than the rest. i think its about a girl who is sick of her old boy friend cos he wouldn't let her have her say, but she is now fighting back, hence the chorus.

General Commentto me the chorus is like.. the person she's talking about always does or says things to make her angry or upset and when this happens she leaves or tries to leave.. but the other person wont call after her because it doesnt really bother them that much that she has left, or they know that she'll be back anyway.. because she cant be without them... and it just keeps repeating like that. 'this is how it goes..' this song is exactly how i feel

General Commentyah.. i can relate to this song.

i think its just about a girl who's upset by her boyfriend, or this guy she loves and she leaves-- really meaning it be for good. but he knows theres not point in running after her because she'll just come back on her own.

General Commentto me this song is about missy being with this guy that shes not really compatible with, they fight alot and disagree, but she always looses it and gets angry where he is the type of guy that sits back and stays cool. he never chases her but she still comes back to him. The repetitition of the chorous and the title "this is how it goes" indicates that this scenario is one that occurs frequently, and is told like a story.

General CommentI think this is about a girl in a relationship whose partner doesn't allow her to have her own opinion, or won't listen to her point of view. She 'cracks it' ("suddenly I can't stay in this room...i have nothing left to say") and reluctantly walks out (either literally or on the relationship all together) in the hope that her partner will come running after her and say sorry. Of course, this doesn't happen, and she goes crawling back because, as much as she knows she is not being heard, she loves them too much to really leave them. Her partner knows that she will always come running back: they have the power in the relationship. I really feel her angst- her partner comes across as though they don't appreciate her, respect her or care as much as they should! When she sings "in case you chase me", it is almost a plea- she knows they won't!

General CommentI see one of those completely dysfunctional relationships that by all accounts should not work... but somehow it does. They fight, the argue, they come so close to leaving each other every five seconds, but they really love each other and always end up back together. If anyone is a Scrubs fan, think of Dr. Cox and Jordan.

My OpinionThis song just reminds me of Ron and Hermione from Harry Potter. It has their relationship written all over it!!! Superfedora's comment has hit the nail on the head. That's the song in a nutshell :)
