"I Believe in You" as written by and I. Bradshaw B. Robertson....
They ask me how I feel
And if my love is real
And how I know I'll make it through
And they, they look at me and frown
They'd like to drive me from this town
They don't want me around
'Cause I believe in you

They show me to the door
They say don't come back no more
'Cause I don't be like they'd like me to
And I, I walk out on my own
A thousand miles from home
But I don't feel alone
'Cause I believe in you

I believe in you even through the tears and the laughter
I believe in you even though we be apart
I believe in you even on the morning after
Oh, when the dawn is nearing
Oh, when the night is disappearing
Oh, this feeling is still here in my heart

Don't let me drift too far
Keep me where you are
Where I will always be renewed
And that which you've given me today
Is worth more than I could pay
And no matter what they say
I believe in you

I believe in you when wintertime turns to summer
I believe in you when white turn to black
I believe in you even though I be outnumbered
Oh, though the earth may shake me
Oh, though my friends forsake me
Oh, even that couldn't make me go back

Don't let me change my heart
Keep me set apart
From all the plans they do pursue
And I, I don't mind the pain
Don't mind the driving rain
I know I will sustain
'Cause I believe in you

    General CommentI'm a left-wing liberal Catholic.
For many people I've met being Christian or religious in any way is equal to being a right-wing conservative moron, or being under the opression of them by believing in the whole bs.
I considered myself way closer to George Carlin than to George W Bush, but I still believe in God.
So this song is very important to me.

General Commentyeah its different but I guess that just goes to show its not a perfect world anymore because in another time they would believe....now enemies exist, messages get skewed in the web, Rain seeps in, the rose loses its pedals as time ticks away...but whos to say wanting to believe can't turn into believing with time..but whats it going to take?...hopefully the last pedal in the heart of the person who isnt quite being believed in doesnt drop before his wanting turns into actually.

General CommentA beautiful ballad, about Dylan's converting to Christianity in 1978 or sometime about that. He suffers opposition from his friends and the people he knows, but he's not moving:

"Oh, though the earth may shake me
Oh, though my friends forsake me
Oh, even that couldn't make me go back."

Whether you believe in it or not, you
    cannot stay unmoved by this.

    If you employ your imagination,
you can also look upon it as a love ballad.

General CommentBob Dylan is such a great story teller.. and isn't it true that when you believe in someone it's different than WANTING to believe in someone.

General Commentits just hard today to believe in something/ someone i guess especially when the vibe is wrong. Its understandable that you wouldnt then, especially when the person who wants to believe but cant has been apart from the person they want to believe in...maybe this is the reason they can't fully yet... the lack of information, the time that has passed that has weakened what they know about the truth in their eyes, the sound of their voice, just who they are. But Bob seems to strongly believe in whoever or whatever he is referencing in this song and i think its so cool that he knows enough to be strong in it. Like what did it take for him?

General CommentHockyjocky.................got to thinking about this and wanting is so far from actually. And if you didnt believe in someone forwhatever reason ..someone that you should have...then that was your mistake/bad fortune. I don't think the other person should accept/settle for someone that couldn't. And even though they have love for them...its like there IS a better man.

General CommentBob Dylan is an absolutely brilliant singer. Nasal, yes, but brilliant.

He's a great poet and an incredible composer, but his voice, more than any other, as nasal or "rhaspy" as it is, can create such emotion.

Outside of maybe Pavarotti's version of Nessun Dorma, Dylan owns emotional music.

And this song is his absolute BEST when it comes to that. Muslim, Christian, Jew, Agnostic, Atheist, Satanist, Potter...
It doesn't matter who you are and whether you agree with the spiritual message of the song (I do, though) the emotion in it can't be denied.

It's just absolutely ON THE MARK!

General CommentIt is both sad and joyful to me that almost nobody knows this song. It's amazing that even somebody as great as Bob Dylan is dependent on radio and general cultural mediums to popularize their music. I'm about as far from a Christian as you can be and still be a white American, and yet there is no denying the incredible beauty of this song. I agree with the previous commenter about Dylan's voice. If you prefer a clean, crisp, meaning-bereft delivery like Celine Dion or Adele or Michael Buble to Dylan's penetrating emotional delivery, then I just feel sorry for you as a person. I'm so glad I took the time to delve into an unappreciated Dylan album and found something priceless.
