"Lord Anthony" as written by and Martin/murdoch/colburn/cooke/david/geddes/jackson/....
Anthony, bullied at school
Get your own back, now you are cool
Or are you scared?
Bunking off though you're a toff
It's all gone wrong again, you've got double maths
And the teacher's got no control so
The boys will run riot, you will stay quiet
Or you will die

Tony at the back of the gym
Smoke another one, your chances are slim
Cause here they come again
And they got you on the ground
Tasting blood again, at least it's your own
When will you realize that it never pays
To be smarter than teachers
Smarter than most boys?
Shut your mouth, start kicking the football
Bang on the teeth, you're off for a week boy

You may as well take it in the guts, it can't get worse
Take it in the guts, it can't get worse than this
You'll soon be old enough to leave them
And without a notion of a care
You'll lift two fingers in the air to linger there

Tony, you're a bit of a mess
Melted Toblerone under your dress
And if the boys could see you they would pass you right bye
Blue mascara running over your eye
When will you realize that it never pays
To be smarter than teachers
Smarter than most boys?
Shut your mouth, start kicking the football
Bang on the teeth, you're off for a week boy

They call you Lord Anthony
But hey, it could be worse than
Lord Anthony, but hey, it could be worse than
Lord Anthony, but hey, it kind of suits you anyway
You'll soon be old enough to leave them
And without a notion of a care
You'll lift two fingers in the air to linger there

General CommentWow, it feels like this song was written for me. In high school, I was always the quiet guy that nobody ever understood or paid attention to. I always felt different than everyone else. I would always get higher grades than most other kids and I was often bullied. Also, the part about sneaking out and smoking cigarettes completely describes me. At least I can laugh at all of those idiots from high school, because I like better music than them. Also, to top it off, my name is Anthony!

General CommentThis song is definitely about an intelligent, affeminate teenage boy who is severely picked on at school. He dresses up as a girl at home and dreams of walking the streets as his true self and not being an outcast.

As for the above post, I agree with you to a point, except that the song is about one person who has two personas, one being private and hidden.

This song is not about your average teenager, but then again I've never really heard a B&S song about a "normal" adolesence.

    Regardless I love this song.

General CommentThis song make me smile and then smile some more - it was my 10 year old little girl whom pointed out that Lord Anthony was a girl after our 2nd listen. I don't know if Lord Anthony is a reference to School Parkas(snorkels) that everyone in Scotland had in the late 70's early 80's. Or maybe thats just my obscure old mind wishing wistfully.

General Commentwell gender doesn't necessarily matter here. What does matter is what its about. It is about the difficulty of growing up different than everybody else. Making it through the hardest years without anybody who understands you. As for the reference of Anthony as a Lord, thats referring to how hard it must be. I mean really its hard enough having friends and people to help you, but alone?

General CommentI didn't think Lord Anthony was a girl (or at least not biologically) I thought ze was transgender or just a transvestite and ze was beat up and felt pressured to act more manly because ze was too feminine.

General CommentAnthony never fits in but when he's dressed as a girl it's sort of his escape from it all 'cause no one will recognise him and hecan be who he likes.
Have you noticed alot of B&S songs seem to be set in a very small community?

General Commentits important to remember that there is a difference between sex and gender. you sex is genetic. your gender is the social category (for lack of a better word) that you identify yourself with because of or despite your sex.
dancepartycoruption is right, it doesn't matter if its about a boy, girl, trans, or whatever. its about growing up different from everyone around you and not being able to connect with anyone.

General CommentWhenever I've listened to this song, I got the idea that the protaganist that Stuart Murdoch is singing about was a boy, hence the lines
"you’re off for a week boy"
    " Smarter than most boys"
But I completely agree with the interpretation that this song is about growing up isolated and dreaming of leaving it all behind.
