The Lord is a monkey
Thanksgiving's coming on the Fourth of July
In the form of a girl with a needle in her eye
Well she come from out west on a nickel's worth of gas
Got her mind on her money and a dope up her ass
Outside of Phenix she was kinda broke down
Burned a cracker-boy rig and she was out of that town.

Well she was a hairy creature in the ashwam bed
She was sellin' more skies had a funky-ass head
Well she played with my mouth and she threw me on the bed
And she cut off my balls and she sewed e'm to my head
Well she's headin' back east in a '67 Caddy
Got her mind on her money and a dope for her daddy

Well I met her on the street where she beat me like a fool
Then she got me accepted to an ivy league school
Well I really did good but it's kickin' my ass
I lost 38 pounds and my eye turned to glass
Well she's looking pretty good first week in July
She's got a dope up her ass and a needle in her eye

Thanksgivings coming on the Fourth of July
In the form of a girl with a needle in her eye
Well she come from out west on a nickel's worth of gas
Got her mind on her money and a dope up her ass

General CommentThere's really no meaning to this song. Just Gibby going off on one of his crazy lyric trips.

And isn't it 'Well, she was a Hare Krishner..'?

General CommentThese lyrics are wrong, and so the meaning is lost.

From what I've gathered (I won't deny it's tough to understand) the real lyrics go as follows:

Ahh, the Lord is a monkey

Thanksgiving's comin on the Fourth of July
In the form of a girl with a needle in her eye
Well she come from out west on a nickel worth of gas
She's got her mind on her money and her dope up her ass
Outside of Phoenix had a gimme, broke down
Burned her crack and bought a rig, she was outta that town

    Ohh

Well she was a Hare Krishna in the (Ashram Bare?)
She was sellin “Good as God,” had her funky ass hair
She put food in my mouth and she threw me in the bed
Where she cut off my balls and she sewed em to my head
Now she's headin back east in a '67 caddy
Got her mind on her money and her dope for her daddy

    Uh

Well I met her on the street where she beat me like a fool
Then she got me accepted to an Ivy League school
Well I real did good but it's kickin my ass
I lost 38 pounds and my eye turned to glass
Well she's lookin pretty good first week of July
She's got her dope up her ass and a needle in her eye.

It's about meeting a drug dealing girl who got him hooked on something new. Hence, Thanksgiving in the middle of summer.

She's got the best stuff, and she's smuggling it (up her ass) across the country, west to east. The internet always disappoints on Butthole Surfer lyrics.

General CommentI think this song is, to some extent, going nowhere. The setting is a combination of thanksgiving and July 4th, two large holidays, but all the girl can do is stab herself with needles and get her body abused in the form of excessive love-making. She finds someone, helps them get into an Ivy-league, then simply mutilates them and flees.

Man, the more I try to think about this song, the less sense it makes.

General CommentThomhale, while your lyrics do seem to be correct, the meaning of this song, like most Butthole Surfers songs, is nonexistent. They are well known for consuming massive amounts of hallucinogens over their 20+ year career, and it shows in their music and nonsensical lyrics.

My InterpretationVery confusing song to say the least.

    Part 1
-Ahh, the Lord is a monkey

Thanksgiving's comin on the Fourth of July
In the form of a girl with a needle in her eye
Well she come from out west on a nickel worth of gas
She's got her mind on her money and her dope up her ass
Outside of Phoenix had a gimme, broke down
Burned her crack and bought a rig, she was outta that town-

*A girl sells drugs (heroin?) that mess with the mind so much makes you think it's Thanksgiving during the summer.
*She's traveling across the country to sell drugs she is smuggling in her ass.

    Part 2
-Well she was a Hare Krishna in the Ashram Bare
She was sellin Good as God, had her funky ass hair
She put food in my mouth and she threw me in the bed
Where she cut off my balls and she sewed em to my head
Now she's headin back east in a '67 caddy
Got her mind on her money and her dope for her daddy-

Hare Krishna = A Hindu hymn praying to the God Krishna.
Ashram = A Hindu sage who lives in nature.
*So the line "Well she was a Hare Krishna in the Ashram Bare" doesn't really make much since it's saying the girl is a hymn in a sage. Maybe meaning she's a Hindu? That would explain the title somewhat.
*The girl sold lots of drugs. (She was sellin Good as God)
*The girl cut some guys balls off randomly.

    Part 3
-Well I met her on the street where she beat me like a fool
Then she got me accepted to an Ivy League school
Well I real did good but it's kickin my ass
I lost 38 pounds and my eye turned to glass
Well she's lookin pretty good first week of July
She's got her dope up her ass and a needle in her eye.-

*The girl beat some guy up and got him high on grade A drugs? (Ivy League school).
*The drugs made the guy lose 38 pounds.
*The girl only comes around once a year? (Well she's lookin pretty good first week of July)

So in short the song talks about a Hindu girl driving her 1967 Cadillac across the country from west to east selling drugs (heroin?) so powerful that it's makes you think it's winter during the summer and cutting people's balls off.

As for the title I think is just reffering to how Hindu's have some (what seems to Westerns) as odd Gods in this case a monkey. In real Hinduism there are some monkey related gods such as Hanuman.

General CommentThe guy is saying HARE KRISHNA, and yes Hare Krishna maha-mantra is a mantra prayer, however Hare Krishna is also a term used to refer to Gaudiya Vaisnavas. Srila Prabhupada spread the Hare Krishna philosophy when he came to North America and subsequently, the Hare Krishna movement swept North America, in the 60s and 70s(see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/…). Many people joined the movement including people of all ages, races, and religious backgrounds, as well as celebrities(including George Harrison).

It is common for people(especially those who are young and not born into the movement) to leave their family homes and live in the ASHRAM which is like a dorm for male and female monks(each having separate quarters, males and females separated).

After the death of the Movement's leader, Srila Prabhupada, there was a lot of conflict amongst the movement and even accusations of rape(some of which were actually proven in trials), fraud, embezzlement, selling drugs, prostitution and even murder - among other things. These accusations haven't been proven, but, having been a member of the movement at one point in time, the movement sure has its problems and it's quite sad.

I'm not sure if this is what the song's about but it's possible. Keeping in mind that a lot of the people who initially joined were former hippies/users/addicts, it's possible that the song could be referring to such people.

I also should remind everybody that what happened to the movement after Srila Prabhupada passed has nothing to do with the philosophy of Hare Krishna(Vaisnavism), and that the problems in the society do not reflect the philosophy at all!

And for those wondering about the maha-mantra it goes like this:
HARE KRISHNA HARE KRISHNA/KRISHNA KRISHNA HARE HARE/HARE RAMA HARE RAMA/RAMA RAMA HARE HARE

Lyric CorrectionIt's actually "she was selling Gil Scott" in reference to the musician Gil Scott-Heron. The "hair-on" pronunciation is a Southern slang for heroin.

This is a story of boy meets girl, girl has good scag. The end.
