Hold You In My Arms Lyrics

When you came to me with your bad dreams and your fears
It was easy to see you'd been crying
Seems like everywhere you turn catastrophe reigns
But who really profits from the dying
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you in my arms forever

When you kissed my lips with my mouth so full of questions
(it's) My worried mind that you quiet
Place your hands on my face
Close my eyes and say
Love is a poor man's food
No prophesying
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold you forever
And I could hold you in my arms (oh)
I could hold you forever

So now we see how it is
This fist begets this spear
Weapons of war
Symptoms of madness
Don't let your eyes refuse to see
Don't let your ears refuse to hear
You ain't never going to shake this sense of sadness
I could hold you in my arms
I could hold on forever
And I could hold you in my arms
I could hold on forever

I believe this song is about my dilemma. Ray si talking about love he has for someone, but it is unrequited, love never asnwered. So he wonders about the absence of her presence in his arms, and its all too much, too emotional and overwhelming. It seems all too true that his arms are open for teh taking but she dances away and never towards him. That's what this song is about, and the meaning behind already beautiful music makes this so entivingly pretty...

i don't think the love is unrequited, i just think that one is comforting the other. "when you kissed my lips with my mouth so full of questions" means to me that they're in a relationship or at least something that isn't unrequited

I actually picked this song to be covered by one of our friends during our wedding ceremony. It's such a beautiful song...As my fiance and I understand it (or what it means to us)...there's a million bad things going on in the world, bad dreams, fears, catastrophe, weapons of war, symptoms of madness. Even though there's all these bad things going on in the world, I can comfort you and you can comfort me...love can conquer all. This is really driven home with me when he sings:

Don't let your eyes refuse to see Don't let your ears refuse to hear Or you ain't never going to shake this sense of sadness

Basically, see me, hear me. I love you and I'm here and as long as we hold on to eachother, life isn't so bad. "Love is a poor mans food." If man doesn't have love then he'll get so bogged down with all the bad in the world. Love is necessary for survival.

Anyways, that's our take on it. I can't wait to hear it sung at our wedding.

@melanieo7 I love every bit of y'alls thoughts! I wish yall many many wonderful years of happiness! And, I pray someday I will find that as well! Go on now, live that happy life and Always Always have at least a dozen smiles a day for each other! Best Wishes, Bev

He is comforting her from something that has happened to her, maybe someone broke her heart and he wants to be the one to hold her and protect her and make her happy and he is telling her she has to let go of whatever she is getting over or she can't be happy. He could hold her forever if that is what it would take to make her not be sad. This song is beautiful. I fully plan on using this song as my wedding song.

''When you came to me with your bad dreams and your fears It was easy to see that you'd been crying Seems like everywhere you turn catastrophe it reigns But who really profits from the dying''

In the first verse of the song, I think it's about a troubled girl who confides in a boy. He listens to her problems and can see that trouble seems to follow her everywhere she turns. The girl might even have thoughts of death (''..but who really profits from the dying'') but the boy believes that death doesn't solve anything.

''I could hold you in my arms I could hold you forever I could hold you in my arms I could hold you in my arms forever''

The chorus is pretty self explanatory. The boy is willing to do whatever it takes to comfort this girl because he cares for her...he might even be in love with her.

''When you kissed my lips with my mouth so full of questions It's my worried mind that you quiet Place your hands on my face Close my eyes and say Love is a poor man's food Don't prophesize...''

In the second verse of the song, the boy is questioning the relationship he shares with this girl. He questions happiness and might even doubt himself. I envision that this boy feels unworthy of this girl yet is still entirely devoted to her. He sincerely loves her and because she finds solace in him, she begins to believe she might even love him too. She kisses him...and this display stops his questioning and he decides to just embrace her love. However, it isn't clear whether or not the girl has told him (''Love is a poor man’s food; don’t prophesize''). These lyrics simply mean that love cannot be decided and one shouldn't say who should be loved and who shouldn't. In my opinion, the boy believes he is unworthy of being loved. Perhaps he has a dark secret that makes him feel this way...and he only wishes that the girl would comfort him and say these words to him.

''I could hold you in my arms I could hold you forever And I could hold you in my arms I could hold you forever''

Despite his own insecurities, the boy still cares deeply for this girl and his love for her is unconditional. The instrumental break that follows is very heart rendering yet uplifting at the same time. The violins give off a bittersweet sentiment and the intensity of their relationship is beautifully displayed. I personally feel that this instrumental was meant to denote unrequited love. Maybe a secret was revealed or a problem that couldn’t be overcome has caused the girl to deny everything and just drown in her unhappiness.

''So now we see how it is This fist begets the spear Weapons of war Symptoms of madness Don't let your eyes refuse to see Don't let your ears refuse to hear Or you ain't never going to shake this sense of sadness''

In the final verse of the song, the lyrics depict all of the troubles that arise in the world. Fists, which are a display of man’s defensiveness, are capable of creating weapons of war. The lyrics (‘’Don't let your eyes refuse to see; Don't let your ears refuse to hear; Or you ain't never going to shake this sense of sadness'') simply mean that trouble is life…and in order to surpass it you need to just accept things as they are.

‘‘I could hold you in my arms I could hold on forever And I could hold you in my arms I could hold forever’’

This song is from the album Trouble and I think this song really represents the idea of the name. This is undoubtedly my favorite song. Although my interpretation is of unrequited love, I think this song could also simply be about two lovers who comfort one another in this crazy world we live in.

My Interpretation
Cover art for Hold You In My Arms lyrics by Ray LaMontagne

I think this is a song about the troubled girl he loves.

"When you came to me with your bad dreams and your fears, it was easy to see you'd been crying. Seems like everywhere you turn, catastrophe it reigns But who really profits from the dying I could hold you in my arms I could hold you forever I could hold you in my arms I could hold you forever"

All her faults, all the trouble that follows her he loves her for. All he wants to do is hold her, comfort her, be with her.

When you kissed my lips with my mouth so full of questions My worried mind that you quiet Place your hands on my face Close my eyes and say That love is a poor man's food Don't prophesize

She is telling him we live for love, it is free, it keeps us going, stop questioning that. Stop questioning this.

So now we see how it is This fist begets the spear Weapons of war Symptoms of madness Don't let your eyes refuse to see Don't let your ears refuse to hear Or you ain't never going to shake this sense of sadness

He loves her so he tells her, stop ignoring what is happening, stop shrinking back form your life. open your eyes and ears, or this sadness won't go away.

It is what it is. She is troubled and he loves her. And for that I love this song.

My Interpretation

@sunnygrayedays I like your interpretation, but to me it's about a country that's going through turmoil and the singer is feeling love and worries over it's condition. Troubles and injustices are plaguing it and the singer wants to heal it. Love for country.

That's very different from the way I've always heard it. I always got the impression that the first verse was from the point of view of one person comforting another. The second verse strikes me as being from the point of view of the person being comforted. The first verse has "you came to me," whereas the second one has "you quiet my worried mind" (loosely paraphrased, lol). Holding each other is the source of the comfort for both.

I've often wondered if this song was written with something like 9/11 in mind. Maybe that's just me...

I agree with insomniac328 -- it is about unrequited love, moreso that he's saying he would love this woman but for whatever reason (maybe too much going on in her life "sense of sadness" or a bad relationship) she doesn't see how good he could be. A kind of "nice guys finish last" love song.

Quite applicable to real life -- think of all the times you've watched friends chose the bad guy or girl over the loyal, dependable relationship.

i LOVE this song its an incredible love song. i think the people involved are probably in a complicated situation but the simplicity of his words make it seem as if its all about to come together and make sense.
