@[Diderik:33655] "Your a holiday!" Was a popular term used in the 50s/60s to compliment someone on their all around. For example, not only are they beautiful, but they are fun and kind too ... just an all around "holiday".
I think your first comment is closer to being accurate. The singer/song writers state "Millions of eyes can see, yet why am i so blind!? When the someone else is me, its unkind its unkind". I believe hes referring to the girl toying with him and using him. He wants something deeper with her, thats why he allows himself to be as a puppet (even though for her fun and games) as long as it makes her happy. But he knows deep down that she doesnt really want to be serious with him and thats what makes him.
I watched the proverbial sunrise
Coming up over the Pacific and
You might think I'm losing my mind,
But I will shy away from the specifics
'Cause I don't want you to know, where I am
'Cause then you'll see my heart
In the saddest state it's ever been.
This is no place to try and live my life.
Stop right there, that's exactly where I lost it.
See that line, well I never should have crossed it.
Stop right there, well I never should have said
That it's the very moment that I wish that I could take back.
I'm sorry for the person I became.
I'm sorry that it took so long for me to change.
I'm ready to try and never become that way again
'Cause who I am hates who I've been.
Who I am hates who I've been.
I talk to absolutely no one.
Couldn't keep to myself enough.
And the things bottled inside have finally begun
To create so much pressure that I'll soon blow up.
I heard the reverberating footsteps
Sinking up to the beating of my heart,
And I was positive that unless I got myself together,
I would watch me fall apart.
And I can't let that happen again
'Cause then you'll see my heart
In the saddest state it's ever been.
This is no place to try and live my life.
Stop right there, that's exactly where I lost it.
See that line, well I never should have crossed it.

I'm ready to try and never become that way again
'Cause who I am hates who I've been.
Who I am hates who I've been.
Who I am hates who I've been
And who I am won't take the second chance you gave me.
Who I am hates who I've been
'Cause who I've been only ever made me
So sorry for the person I became.
So sorry that it took so long for me to change.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

i could never figure out what that first line was....!
anyone know what a peruvial sunrise is...? :-/
Proverbial - of or relating to or resembling or expressed in a proverb thefreedictionary.com/proverbial

I think he is saying that the sunrise is beautiful, like something described in a Proverb.
I think it is the Proverbial (Meaning: expressed in a proverb)Sunrise.
here is another definition:- Used to replace a word that might be considered unacceptable in a particular situation, when using a well known phrase; The groin or the testicles; Of, resembling, or expressed as a proverb, cliché, fable, or fairy tale; Widely known; famous; stereotypical

I have used this word used to describe something "same old" or usual. Like the same sunrise it ever was.
In this case, "proverbial sunrise" means not the actual sunrise (which would be difficult, because the Pacific is west of the Californian coast he's likely referring to), but a metaphorical one. Like "the grass is greener on the other side of the fence", it's the "proverbial" fence, because we're not talking about the actual fence between my grass and my neighbor's, or the color quality of our lawns.
