Alone again or Lyrics
I won't forget
All the times I've waited patiently for you
And you'll do just what you choose to do
And I will be alone again tonight my dear
Somebody said to me
You know that I could be in love with almost everyone
I think that people are
The greatest fun
And I will be alone again tonight my dear

"Forever Changes" has been one of my all-time favorite albums for decades now. It still sounds fresh, unpredictable and amazing. I am not familiar with this Bottle Rocket movie that people are talking about, but if people are discovering Love in this way, then that's a good thing.
This a great Bryan MacLean song, and it is remarkable that it is one of the most known and covered Love songs, since Arthur Lee was the band's leader and main songwriter. (Arthur's songs on "Forever Changes" tend to be more obliquely structured and have very abstract lyrics.)
The Damned did a good cover version of this song in 1986. More recently, Sid & Susie (aka Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs) did a respectable version. But the original is the best.

This song... it is so very fine.

Sorry for the double post; not sure how that happened.

wow - i too always thought it was "and i will be alone again tonight with you"... changes the entire meaning of the song

Is it a comment on 'free love' ? He wants to be alone with his girl but she's out loving anyone.
@pconl I don't know. It's true she's not as serious about him as he is about her, but I always saw it as him being sarcastic when he mentions hearing about someone "who could be in love with everyone because people are the greatest fun." I just thought he was contrasting that kind of extremely extroverted attitude with his own introversion and wish to be with just the one person. I didn't think it was necessarily the girl because he doesn't say "you" instead of "somebody." Anyway, I love this song, too.

Like LoserNo1, it took me years to figure out who did this song. It sounds much like the Moody Blues at one point, and then you'd swear the early Tijuana Brass were there in the studio.
Full of unresolved tension, it's truly a mini masterpiece. It can be about whatever emotional turbulence you wish to bring to the minor key koans. I read somewhere that Bryan M. said there were other lyrics that got cut from the album mix. Master tapes reported lost. Maclean seemed obsessed with getting it right, as revealed by the posthumous release "ifyoubelievein" where there are no less than three other versions of this song.
The chemistry was lost, never to be regained. Love.

One of my favourite songs. Ever. Beautiful.

No one gives a fuck how much you like this song, or how it gives you a cathartic orgasm, your suppose to explain what the song means. After all, this website is called "SONGMEANINGS.COM". But anyway, I think the song is about a guy that is in love with a girl, but she doesnt reciprocate his feelings so she stays away from him, causing his suffering. He has hopes that she will fall in love with him one day, since he heard from someone that they could "fall in love with almost anyone". Great song.

The beauty of music is that everyone interprets it differently!
For me, “Alone Again Or” is about a person who is in search of love, not necessarily from a single person but in general terms they’re looking for love. Maybe they find many women lovable but are too afraid to initiate anything with them. Even to the point where his friends tell him that he can be in love with almost everyone and his response is that he thinks people are the greatest fun.
Ultimately, I think it can be summed up to a man who maybe is a very sociable person but is not necessarily good with women, he often fantasies about possible relationships with many different women. Though, regardless of the anxiety/day dreams he has regarding these women he is okay with being alone…or maybe he won’t won’t be! He remains optimistic for love whilst accepting it’s okay to be alone.

great song
