All the words in my mouth
That the scene deemed unworthy of letting out
Banded together to form a makeshift militia
And burrowed bloodily through my tongue and my teeth
So I stood proud in the gallery
With my open socket of a mouth for them to see
They just laughed and said "That boy, he
That boy's got woe, whoa
He lives with woe, whoa"

And this girl who I met
Whose pride makes her hard to forget
She took pity on me horizontally
But most likely because of my band
And that's all I can get when I'm lonely
And these visions of death seem to own me
In the quiet of the classrooms
All across the stacked United States of Woe, whoa
We live with woe, oh, oh, oh, oh

She said "I can't get laid in this town
Without these pointy fucking shoes
My feet are so black and blue
And so are you"

Please take me
Out of my body up through the palm trees
To smell California in sweet hypocrisy
Floating, my senses surround my body
I wake my nose to smell that ocean burn
Hah, hah!

Ba da da, ba da da, ba da da, da da da
Ba da da, ba da da, ba da da, da da da
Ba da da, ba da da, ba da da, da da da
Ba da da, la da da, la da da

So now I'm forging ahead
Passed all the plutocrats who sold me out
Go sob in your bed
If life is twice as pretty once you're dead
Then send me a card
I'm still the optimist
Though it is hard
When all you want to be is in a dream
A dream

Ba da da, ba da da, ba da da, da da da
La da da, la da da, la da da, da da

I feel like the meaning of this song is utterly simple.

    The term

    "Just be yourself"

Comes to mind. The Scene deemed unworthy of his words, yet he stands proud in the gallery of these people looking at him. Spewing his words out for everyone to hear.

The girl, who cant get laid without her Pointy fuckin shoes, is another example. She can't be herself and "Succeed" but she wants to.

The last verse kinda messed with my theory a bit but brings it all back into focus, by saying "when all you want to be is in a dream"

Meaning, To me, the life that they are living isnt up to their own standards.

But by saying, "If life is twice as pretty once you're dead then send me a card i'm still the optomist, though it is hard.." right before that, I feel like he's really grasping that fact, that you need to be yourself, and telling the people who want to change themselves and him should "send him a card" so to speak.

    Song Meaning

Let me start by saying that the magic of music lies behind the interpretation of the listener.

As for this song, it seems straight forward at first, jumps into a metaphor, and concludes with, well a conclusion.

"All the words in my mouth that the scene deemed unworthy of letting out banded together To form a makeshift militia and burrowed bloodily through my tongue and my teeth."

Max had an idea for a song, but its topic was viewed as morbid or just sad.

I stood proud in the gallery with my open socket of a mouth for them to see. They all just laughed and said "That boy , he, that boy's got woe. (woe.) He lives with woe. (woe.)"

Max 'shared' said song with the public, to which they saw that he had woe, or sorrow/distress given the lyrics of the song.

And this girl who I met whose pride makes her hard to forget, She took pity on me (horizontally) but most likely because of my band. (hey)

He was laid because of his musical career but he saw it as a pity fuck

It's all I can get when I'm lonely and these visions of death seem to own me In the quiet of the classrooms all across the stacked United States of Woe. We live with woe.

Says that he dwells on unhappy thoughts, but says 'hey everyone has issues'

    [Metaphor Time]

She said "I can't get laid in this town without these pointy fucking shoes. My feet are so black and blue and so are you."

Choice of metaphor is a women with pointy shoes. The shoes are probably Max's fake happier persona, which without it he wouldn't have friends, but being a fake is making him 'black and blue' so beaten up emotionally....causing, you guessed it, more woe.

Please take me out of my body up through the palm trees to smell California in sweet hypocrisy. Floating. My senses surround my body. I wake my nose to smell that ocean burn.

Admittedly, this seems rather random. If I had to guess it would be about his drug use solution to his problems back in this day. burning oceans, and heightened senses away from reality.

So now I'm forging ahead past all the plutocrats who sold me out. Go sob in your bed. If life is twice as pretty once your dead then send me a card.

Max concludes he will keep on trucking, probably due to a drug induced epiphany contrary to his earlier attitudes. He tells others that are struggling to be an optimist like he is or just shut up.

I'm still the optimist though it is hard when all you want to be is in a dream.

Max says that his struggles derive from him wanting everything in his life to fall into place perfectly as if it were a dream. He acknowledges that this is difficult. Rinse and repeat.

"i can't get laid in this town without these pointy fucking shoes"

i think this is like a reference to the wizard of oz

with the magic shoes that can take u anywhere

coz it makes sence if u think about it...?

'when all you want to be is in a dream'

doesnt she wake up and its all a dream at the end of the film?

I love this song. hangthedj9 (is that sn a mention to the band Hang the DJ from Pennsylvania? b/c I knew of of the members) described it well when he said that when Max sings that last verse it makes you feel like your pushing all of the people in your way off to the side and forging along. The only part I dont understand is the line

float in my senses, surround my body i wake my nose to smell that ocean burn

if anyone has any opinion on that line please comment. Or if anyone has that picture that was posted above please repost it because that link doesnt work anymore.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
