I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Lives in Edinburgh
Just across the road
Sometimes my stereo
And in my aching bones
Its on the sugar hill
And in your ring tone
Shake those windows
Sums and songs and
Beats and rhymes
And I like this blackout
It just helps to
Love those clear night skies
Just let the record play
And bring it back again
You can't appreciate
What we were into then
In two seconds
He was recognized
And all the old school heads
Nodded back in time
And though we just met
I've known you all my life
Shake those windows
Sums and songs and
Beats and rhymes
And I like this blackout
It just helps to
Love those clear night skies
Just let the record play
And bring it back again
You can't appreciate
What we were into then
Just let the record play
And bring it back again
You can't appreciate
What we were into then
Just let the record play
And bring it back again
You can't appreciate
What we were into then
Just let the record play
And bring it back again
You can't appreciate
What we were into then
Just let yourself go
Just let yourself go
Just let yourself go
Just let yourself go
Just let yourself go
Just let yourself go
Just let yourself go
Just let yourself go
Just across the road
Sometimes my stereo
And in my aching bones
Its on the sugar hill
And in your ring tone
Shake those windows

Beats and rhymes
And I like this blackout
It just helps to

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Great song. Enough said. I agree that its about remembering hangin' out with friends and listening to old school music. Saw these guys in Toronto.....good show.
I saw Athlete live two days ago, This song completely blew me away it was unbelievable and the atmosphere was fantastic.. this song needs more comments!!
Saw them last night, this has been my favourite song since I first heard Athlete 4 years ago and I've been waiting since then to see it live. Absolutely amazing, as was their whole set. This is my favourite song of all time.
I love this song
My favourite Athlete song by far. Just a song about nostalgia I guess, thinking back to listening to old skool hip hop in days gone by (possibly at university?). Love it.
Is there any chance that the lyric is "psalms and songs..." not "sums and songs..."? Everywhere I look seems to say sums, but psalms seems to make more sense. Not necessarily in the sense of the book of the Bible, Psalms; more like a poetic, hymn-like song?
