i've never seen you so awful
i found you at the bottom of a russian novel
gold medal and a crown
a cardigan and a frown
all maladjusted and clever
the greatest smiths fan ever
your picture in the papers
the captions shout
"there is a boy and he never goes out"
that same song on repeat
you haven't left the house in weeks
won't even come out for dinner
toby grace, world record winner
i guess you thought it'd make you feel better somehow
but heaven knows your miserable now
heaven knows your miserable now
heaven knows your miserable now
so toby take a bow

General CommentI love how this song is like playing "spot the Smiths reference".

General CommentThis song is for days you've done something selfish and dumb and after it's all over, you feel like kicking yourself in the teeth. I feel like this song is about a downright lethargic and unsatisfied guy who just thinks everything is shitty, but turns this into a sort of "emo" lifestyle, acting as if he invented it himself. Yet, this lifestyle is dull and doesn't make him any happier.

All in all, the general theme is that shutting out the world because you're miserable won't change anything and will only leave you to regret it in the end. A very good message and an equally good song.

General CommentI like to think the singer is really talking to himself, saying in a sarcastic tone, "Way to go. You're miserable and it's your own fault." I think they avoid things like friends, etc. because they think that they're doing themselves a favour. Like they can't get hurt if no one is around to hurt them, but in the end, without anyone around they feel miserable. The only thing they have is music, but after listening to that one song over and over again even that becomes empty and incomparable to human company.

Or at least that's my own, very personalized, take on it.
