Stuck in a rut with no way out,
'Cause of a time when things were all about
Being better way back then,
And the complacent didn't ask questions.
So bow down to your master,
And fit the image bound straight for disaster,
Enslaved and misled
By the lies that you've been fed.

As you lay there in deceit, (Stuck in a rut!)
Caught up in your prefab dream.
This mould's been formed for you, (Stuck in a rut!)
Compliments of the red, white and blue.
To scared to break away, (Stuck in a rut!)
What will they think? What will they say?
If you live your life today (Stuck in a rut!)
And fuck this American way.

Disease! This disease! With shit up to my knees,
It’s spreading across the nation from sea to filthy sea.
Just slavin' away at this repetitious mass decay,
I did it yesterday, and I'll do the same again.
Today is the day that I'm gonna break out,
I wanna run through the streets and give a shout.
Stay ahead of the sickness that falls on me,
So I lessen myself just to stay free.
I was choking like a victim right from the start,
You can use my body but you can't take my heart
And soul away from me
'Cause I'm In control of my destiny.

With shit up to my knees,
It's spreading across the nation from sea to filthy sea.
Just slavin' away at this repetitious mass decay,
I did it yesterday, and I'll do the same again today.

And I'll do the same again today.

word....fuck normalcy, it is like a disease because it consumes everyone and leads no where unity and individuality will break these bullshit traditions this country prides itself on

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Midnight
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
