Somewhere beyond happiness and sadness
I need to calculate
What creates my own madness
And I'm addicted to your punishments
And you're the master
And I am waiting for disaster

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder
(Getting away, getting away, getting away)

I drink my drink and I don't even want to
I think my thoughts when I don't even need to
I never look back 'cause I don't even want to
And I don't need to
Because I'm getting away with murder

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder
(Getting away, getting away, getting away, getting away)
(Getting away, getting away, getting away, getting away, getting away with murder)

Somewhere beyond happiness and sadness
I need to calculate
What creates my own madness
And I'm addicted to your punishments
And you're the master
And I'm craving this disaster

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder
(Getting away, getting away, getting away)

I feel irrational
So confrontational
To tell the truth I am
Getting away with murder
It is impossible
To never tell the truth
But the reality is
I'm getting away with murder

    My Interpretation

"Somewhere beyond happiness and sadness" Some person is obsessively in love with another person, but gets rejected.

"I need to calculate What creates my own madness" The lover want's to protect his loved one, but he can't do anything to achieve this.

"And I'm addicted to your punishment And you're the master And I am waiting for disaster" He feels powerless and sorry for the fact that he cannot protect her, and realizes that murdering that person and then himself is the only way to alter that fate.

"I feel irrational" "Irrational" are his suicidal thoughts.

"So confrontational" "confontational" because he is gonna be killing someone

"To tell the truth I am Getting away with murder" To kill oneself right after a murder can be viewed as a means of getting away with murder

"It isn't possible To never tell the truth But the reality is I'm getting away with murder" He feels ashamed for his obsession and would rather stop this, but it isn't possible for him because his obsession is too strong, so all that he can think about now is his planned murder-suicide.

"I drink my drink and I don't even want to I think my thoughts when I don't even need to I never look back 'cause I don't even want to And I don't need to Because I'm getting away with murder" It is now, decided for him that he is going to commit murder-suicide. He waited and thought long and hard about wether he should do it or not. He is now awaiting the right moment to fulfill his plan and all that he is doing in this moment is merely an neccessity, because his time is going to end soon.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
