i think its about someone that is trying to get back a relationship to being good agian... but the other person knows that they cant be good again, and that the 'chaser' is just chasing the ghost of a good thing... chasing what used to be good, but just isnt there anymore...... and they also want to try to alter feelings or personality to fit the other persons just to be with them... like the whole 'bend the pieces till they fit' part-like when someone changes who they are just to please others or to manipulate others into loving us maybe sorta kinda!

thanks cheerup emo kid- lol.....i never could really figure out what this song meant but now I realize it's just about chasing somebody and trying to make an old love work that really isn't there....it's verry true and I can really relate to this song because it's somethign I do all the time......this song helps me explain that.....
this song is probably one of the best ones off of a mark a mission a brand a scar, because it's all acoustic, just like their old stuff. i think it's about how someone is still in love with someone else and are chasing them, but wasting their time (but you're chasing the ghost of a good thing), because it's not there. and how another is in love with that someone(the real thing). i don't know. i think that i just confused everyone. but whatever. it's just a beautifully written simple song.
chris just puts so much meaning into every single song that it always makes me think no matter what.and that it actually makes me wonder how love really is!?(sigh) if its the greatest thing that could ever happen to you or the one and only simple thing that drives you crazy more and more every single day ?
This is my favorite song by Dashboard, I love the sound of his voice when he sings "But, you're chasin' the ghost of a good thing Haunting yourself as the real thing" its a very moving and emo song... I love it!! I think this song is about some one that he loved and they are gone, and he is "chasing a ghost" because that person isnt really there anymore and no matter what he will love that person even if that person doesnt love them anymore.
I really like this song...I think it's about the loss of someone or something...and it's the sistuation it has caused leaving the person hurt and upset...they are trying to move on but It's really hard for them...but they know they have got to because as it says "Haunting yourself as the real thing It's getting away" by hanging on to what u have just lost your only hurting yourself even more.. but it's so hard as they can't let go of the memories pherhaps so they feel like there chasing after something that isn't real anymore but it still is there to them and is still existing...it's a really sweet song and I think alot of people could relate to it :)
Dashboard Confessional is amazing, Their music is just so flowing and its love. lol This is probably my favorite song by them.. :)

My interpretation of it is it's about denial of losing something good. And no matter how hard we try to keep things the way things were, it won't happen if it's not meant. I don't understand why some things are just here for a little bit. And once you're attached to it, for some reason, it tends to go away. I guess we are bound to lose the things we hold dearly.
