Wash away the thoughts inside
That keep my mind away from you
No more love and no more pride
And thoughts are all I have to do
Ooh remember when it rained
I felt the ground and look up high
And called your name
Ooh remember when it rained
In the darkness I remain
Tears of hope run down my skin
Tears for you that will not dry
They magnify the one within
And let the outside slowly die
Ooh remember when it rained
I felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name
Ooh remember when it rained
In the water I remain
Running down
Oh oh oh
No no no
Oh oh oh, running down
That keep my mind away from you
No more love and no more pride
And thoughts are all I have to do
Ooh remember when it rained
I felt the ground and look up high
And called your name
Ooh remember when it rained
In the darkness I remain
Tears of hope run down my skin
Tears for you that will not dry
They magnify the one within
And let the outside slowly die
Ooh remember when it rained
I felt the ground and looked up high
And called your name
Ooh remember when it rained
In the water I remain
Running down
Oh oh oh
No no no
Oh oh oh, running down

In my view, Groban is making reference to a time when the love and "pride" (confidence, security, at peace and feeling of being "on top of the world, I can do anything" a man feels when he has that area fulfilled)was present in his heart in abundance and poured into his heart and life - that moisturizes and replenishes a specific dry barrenness in the absence of love and companionship. He is remembering that time of "rain"....and then, with a twist of the meaning (clever), sheds a light on the now "down" side of the rain; as it has transitioned from a refreshing rush of love...to tears of loss and aloneness. Also a "drowning" in sorrow, so to speak; while making reference to remaining in the "dark" and "water"....and this sorrow and pain and still remaining gush of love (unrequited) now "running down" like the tears he feels inside as well as the external ones do. He is contrasting the experience of the "rain" in an allegorical form - before & then now. The love or friend is gone from that wonderful rain, yet, he remains behind in that love - still loving, still longing, but now alone in it with stormy darkness (signifies a dark time of pain & sadness, confusion) and the rush (running down) of sorrow and aloneness in that rain water. My take.
RIP Gramma we all miss you so much! April 23
btw the song is called "Remember When It Rained", not 'rains'
