"Through The Wire" as written by David Foster, Tom Keane and Cynthia Weil....
I drink a Boost for breakfast, an Ensure for dessert
Somebody ordered pancakes, I just sip the sizzurp
That right there could drive a sane man berserk
Not to worry, Mr. H-to-the-Izzo's back to wi-zerk
How do you console my mom or give her light support
Telling her her son's on life support?
And just imagine how my girl feel
On the plane, scared as hell that her guy look like Emmett Till
She was with me before the deal, she been trying to be mine
She a Delta, so she been throwing that Dynasty sign
No use in me tryin to be lyin', I been trying to be signed
Trying to be a millionaire, how I used two lifelines
In the same hospital where Biggie Smalls died
The doctor said I had blood clots, but I ain't Jamaican, man
Story on MTV and I ain't trying to make a band
I swear this right here, history in the making, man

What if somebody from the Chi' that was ill got a deal
On the hottest rap label around?
But he wasn't talking about coke and birds
It was more like spoken word
Except he's really putting it down?
And he explained the story about how blacks came from glory
And what we need to do in the game
Good dude, bad night, right place, wrong time
In the blink of a eye, his whole life changed
If you could feel how my face felt, you would know how Mase felt
Thank God I ain't too cool for the safe belt!
I swear to God driver two wants to sue
I got a lawyer for the case to keep what's in my safe safe
My dawgs couldn't tell if I
Looked like Tom Cruise in Vanilla Sky, it was televised
There's been an accident like GEICO
They thought I was burnt up like Pepsi did Michael
I must got a angel
'Cause look how death missed his ass
Unbreakable, what you thought, they'd call me Mr. Glass?
Look back on my life like the Ghost of Christmas Past
Toys "R" Us where I used to spend that Christmas cash
And I still won't grow up, I'm a grown-ass kid
Swear I should be locked up for stupid shit that I did
But I'm a champion, so I turned tragedy to triumph
Make music that's fire, spit my soul through the wire

You know what I'm saying
When the doctor told me I had a um, I was goin' to have a plate on my chin
I said dog, don't you think didn't you realize I'll never make it on the plane now
It's bad enough I got all this jewelry on
Can't be serious man

General CommentThe song sampled in the chorus is "Through the Fire" by Chaka Khan. Here's some other information about the song that I found on another site:

    - Kanye West was in a terrible car accident in October 2002 where he almost died. His jaw was broken in 3 places and in emergency surgery they had to put a metal plate in his chin. When he was in his hospital bed, with his mouth wired shut, he heard Chaka Khan's song "Through the Fire" playing in the background on a CD player. He was just lying back, then he heard her voice melodically singing the line, "Right down to the wire, even through the fire." That's when he got the idea of recording the song to describe what he was going through. Two weeks after his accident, he went to record the song, even though his jaw was still wired shut. He had to release all of his mixed emotions then and there, taking pain medications between takes to complete the song. He had a new appreciation for life - he was living so carelessly and the accident brought everything into perspective.

    - This is based on a sample of Chaka Khan's "Through The Fire." In 2004, Chaka performed this with West at the MTV Video Music Awards. Chaka was horribly off-key; she had a problem with her throat, but sang anyway because she wanted to honor her commitment.

In the lyrics, West mentions that he looked like Emmett Till after the accident. Till was a 14-year-old black boy from Mississippi who was mutilated by white men and dumped in a river because he whistled at a white woman. The case made headlines when the men who did it were acquitted.

General CommentNot to take anything away from this guy, cos he's actually one of the better rappers around now, but in reply to keyyoo's post, Henry Rollins performed dozens of shows live with Black Flag while he had athroat infection and multiple cracked ribs. And Wattie Buchan (the Exploited) has performed with a concussion and a chunk of his tongue missing (an insane fan bit it off). So it shows dedicaation that he'll record with aq broken jaw when Nelly probably wouldn't record with a less-than-satisfactory number of ho's, but just keep things in perspective.
I'll stop getting in your way now.

General CommentProbably my favorite Kanye song. It's hard to tell the story of your own struggle in a detailed way. and he manages here. Truly proves all his critics wrong.

General CommentThis is a really good song. He recorded this song like 3-6 weeks after he broke his jaw with his mouth wired shut.

General CommentI think why this song is such a big hit is the passion coming through Kanye and into the song.

the words are a little difficult to understand, but when you listen to the song knowing that he did it with his JAW WIRED SHUT, you tend to forgive him for that.

now THAT's about as hardcore as anybody can get.

General CommentHenry Rollins also once knocked himself out while preforming. Besides, the point though. This is an amazing song, made even more amazing by the fact that his mouth was wired shut at the time. I think it makes it that much more powerful, and he handles a bad situation with humor and grace.
