I saw you coming from a mile away
Trying to hide behind that pretty face
Bet my last dollar baby you been bruised
Poor little heart all black 'n' blue

Last thing you need's another pickup line
You must have heard them all a thousand times
God only knows what you been through
Believe me I been broken too

It aches, it breaks, it takes your breath away
I've been around that block a time or two

[Chorus:]
Baby, I don't want to fall in love with you
I try, try, try but I can't get around the truth
Please don't say my name, give this heart a break
I don't want to make the same mistake but it's too late
I'll leave on the light
These arms are open all night

I got your taste in the back of my mouth
I want to reach in and pull it out
And I'd be lying if I didn't say
When you're this close I'm afraid
Of the way I'll feel if I touch your hair
The way I'll miss you when you're not there
And that I'll see you when I close my eyes
It's too late, I've crossed that line

It breaks, it aches, it takes your breath away
I'll still be around come closing time

[Chorus]

It's 2 am, it's last call, baby.
The barkeep's gone, I'll walk you home now
Save me, baby

[Chorus]

This song is about the renewal of the ability to trust from a woman who has been burned before. Specifically said, from Bon Jovi's site, Jon wrote this song while thinking about Ally McBeal. Jon guest starred for 9 episodes in the 5th season as Victor Morrison, the handyman Ally hires to fix up her new house. For those of you that didn't watch, Ally had been burned by her boyfriend of 4 years, Larry, and since had failed to have any sort of functional relationship. Victor was romantically interested in Ally but she had too high of standards/crazy ideologies for him. That didn't stop them, however, as you can guess by the song ;).

this was written because Jon was angry at the way they ended things for his character on the show. he gave the lyrics to Calista Flockhart as a gift.

I don't think Ally was with Larry for four years! Robert Downey Jr was only in the series for one season!

also, victor and ally broke up because they didnt mesh well, she didnt break up with him because she had too high standards.

its a cool song though, and its good that jon cared that much to 'end' things properly with Victor and Ally, rather than leave it the way the producers did.

As much as I liked this one when it came out, I think the "Open all night" in the "100,000,000 Fans..." ("So you packed you bags...") is way better and more meaningful to me, since I also had to leave a relationship so that both of us could grow as we wished.

Overall, I know 4 songs with the open arms theme in their title, but the box set version is the best one for me.

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,
