Big Sur Lyrics

So much for the city
Tell me that you'll dance to the end
Just tell me that you'll dance to the end

Hey hey you're The Monkees
And people said you monkeyed around
But nobody's listening now

Just don't go back to Big Sur
Hanging around
Lettin' your old man down
Just don't go back to Big Sur
Baby, baby please don't go
Oh, baby, baby please don't go

So much for the streetlights
They're never gonna guide you home
No they're never gonna guide you home

Down at the steamboat show
Yeah, all the kids started spittin'
I guess I didn't live up to the billing

Just don't go back to Big Sur
Hanging around
Lettin' your old man down
Just don't go back to Big Sur
Baby, baby please don't go
Oh, baby, baby please don't go

Just don't go back to Big Sur
Hanging around
Lettin' your old man down
Just don't go back to Big Sur
Oh, baby, baby please don't go
Oh, baby, baby please don't go

From a 2006 interview with the Thrills:

Interviewer: What are your songs about really?

Conor Deasy: They are escapist songs. We were having a real shitty time at home. They are meant to take us away from where we were. We used to have all these friends in California. They used to have really beautiful girlfriends and beautiful apartments. They were all buff and pumped up. When we saw them next, they were in shambles. They were out of shape, their girlfriends had left them, and they had lost their apartments. California has a lot of potential for falling off the track.

Interviewer: All those dreams of California are an illusion?

Conor: If we spent a few weeks there, we might have come back with a postcard image. We spent more time there, so we came back with a more rounded version of California life.

I submitted this as The Thrills, but then SongMeanings.net changed it to The Thrills (Boston Rock 80s) and added The Thrills (Ireland 00s)....but placed this song under the 80s group. This should be moved to the current Irish Thrills.

its a sunshiney song isn't it. i saw the thrills in november and i wasn't too keen but this song is still great. it's the song you should play when you're sundrenched form the beach and you're travelling back to where your staying with your friends and the suns in your eyes and there's a big lazy blue sky and your feet are full of sand. its beautiful. it could mean lots to people, especially for someone whos leaving them for somewhere else but even if it's not it's just really good to listen to. i think it's a half happy song. you know like you have mega happy songs and ones like this one this reminds me of mr tambourine man by the byrds. i can't imagine myself smileing in the beach situation i described before when this is on it's like an inside happy song. and i don't think it'd sound half as good if it wasn't on the beach. oh ill shut up now.

Ooh I love this song, it's originally The Beachboy's song or something, but I haven't heard that version!
