well, with the name of the song and with the chorus, i think its about looking at things differently, instead of being pessimistic, look at it like the sun is rising for another day, not putting an end to the day. be opptimistic, look at the other side of things
311 never writes about how "shitty" the world is. This is exactly what "Love is a Stream" points out. (Good song by the way, purpose is super melodic). This is about being optimistic throughout the rougher times. It's definately not concuring with the cliche annotation that "this world sucks." You must look through the dark to find the light, optimistics grow, refuse to be jaded and enjoy this world for its beauty and complexity, don't focus so much on its flaws.
both of you are correct, in my opinion. parts of this song talk about optimism, and parts of it also talk about the lack of education or value of it in today's society. alot of 311 songs can have 2 major meanings. I believe the reason for that is Nick and SA can each say different things or have different perspectives on the same idea.
Wow this song definitely describes school to me. About American Culture making us dumb and anxious and then they feed us prozac to fuck with our heads and make us feel happy in this shitty world. I definitely agree with institutions such as schools fucking with our emotions. I feel like my school trys to make me feel certian ways about things, especially anything to do with America since this is an american public school.

Actually if you think a lil more bout the lyrics, what they are actually saying is that there is a lack of education, and that our society if forgetting the importance of intellectualism. "We can usually learn but we burn and then we waste it." The institution reference isn't directed toward learning institutions, more so it references doctors and such that quickly diagnose people with "disabilities"...ie ADD and ADHD. It seems as though this is mainly a pro education rant.

i just got done watching 311 day today, and i noticed that same thing. i thought he was lip syncing at first

This line isn't saying the lack of available education nowadays, it's saying how people are so lazy and don't want to do anything with their lives so they start taking the wrong paths of life- drugs, violence, the such.

I agree 100% about the doctors statement above, that's what I thought when I first heard this song too. Doctors nowadays don't care about their patients, just doing it for the money- they just diagnose their patients with something to feel unnaturally optimistic.
I think this song is FOR education, but not really in favor of our current system of educating because it's hurting the kids. Oh, and anti-psychotic meds are overperscribed to change kids for the "better" and nobody really researches problems or the downside to the meds they take. Thats basically what I get out of this.
