"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
Blind me, erased what was
Stillborn I have become
The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
I've waited here for you for so very long
So empty, just a shell of a man
Stillborn, this I understand
The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
I've waited here for you for so very long
Stillborn I have become
The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
I've waited here for you for so very long
So empty, just a shell of a man
Stillborn, this I understand
The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
I've waited here for you for so very long

This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
well it dont matter what Zakk said i am still keeping the meaning i think of.
Actually, the real story behind the song is, they were in the recording studio when Zakk decided he wanted to add another song to the list so that night he left and he and the drummer sat around and "threw some shit that sounded good, together" he said it took them 20 minutes to put the wholeguitar and drum part together. then they just sdded some lyrics. there was no REAL meaning to this song. all this came from an interview saw on a dvd form guitar world.
so thats the real meaning to the song.
It's about someone who waited for so long for their perfect someone that all that's left after waiting so long is an empty shell of a being when they finally showed up.
Sounds like a guy fell out of love with a girl.
can't beleive im only the second person to coment on this awesome song! but any way, i agree with with esenthiel
to me this is about a christian or religious guy who is having a kid and when his wife pops it out it dies (stillborn) and all he is saying ive waited here for you for so verry long. and the end he is like thee is no god... and all he is saying to himself is ive waited for you for so long... might be wrong but thats h ow i felt when my cousin died once he was poped out
About a guy falling out of love with someone and it leaving a void inside of him. Gosh that sounded corny ;)
I also think its about a guy not carryin about a girl anymore cause she never gave him a chance. I could be wrong but o well, its still a kick ass song
You all are wrong. Zakk has said that this song was about a buddy of his who is severely depressed. He's given up on all forms of life, he's just living and nothing more. He doesn't care..
So empty, just a shell of a man Stillborn, this I understand The feelings I once felt are now dead and gone
Pretty obvious now, eh? I worshop Zakk and all things Zakk. Trust me, that's exactly what this song is about.
Well, that's understandable, but listen to his music. He's rooted pretty deep in some form of religion, whether he follows it or not
