Concrete Angel Lyrics

She walks to school with the lunch she packed
Nobody knows what she's holding back
Wearing the same dress she wore yesterday, she hides the bruises with linen and lace
Oooh

The teacher wonders, but she doesn't ask
It's hard to see the pain behind the mask
Bearing the burden of a secret storm
Sometimes she wishes she was never born

Somebody cries in the middle of the nightThrough the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place
Where she's loved
Concrete Angel

The neigbors hear, but they turn out the lights
A fragile soul caught in the hands of fate
When morning comes, it'll be too late

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place
Where she's loved
Concrete Angel

A statue stands in a shaded place
An angel girl with an upturned face
A name is written on a polished rock
A broken heart that the world forgot

Through the wind and the rain
She stands hard as a stone
In a world that she can't rise above
But her dreams give her wings
And she flies to a place
Where she's loved
Concrete Angel

the first time i heard this song i was just flipping through channels. i immediatley stopped, because i am a huge martina mcbride fan. when i watched the video, and listened to the lyrics i broke down and cried. finally there was a song that i could actually relate to. it was almost like the song was about me. the only difference between me and the song was that i wasnt killed. this song has gotten me through the toughest of times and will do so for a long time. this song is amazing. I also love this song, because in a way, it relates to children all over the world; even the unborn. I love that (hence the name). Anyhow, this is an amazing song!

I love this song soooo much. It speaks to everyone who hear it. I am going to sing it with my best friend at a talent show and dedicate it to abused children. One of my other friends is abused and she comes to school with nothing to eat, and bruises on her arms. She is adopted from Russia. So, Me and my BFF are going to sing this for all the abused children out there. I pray for all who are treated like this and I'm sorry.

I can fully understand and relate to this song. Just as the little girl in this song I was once a little girl being hurt by abuse. Also, like this little girl I too turned to stone as I experienced the death of trust, love, my childhood, innocence, and the list could go on. I am finally finding the freedom from abuse as this little girl has done as I continue to heal and move past my childhood abuse.

This is a really sad song. I love it. I was wondering what two lines in the song meant.

She stands hard as a stone

and

An angel girl with an upturned face.

@italian_girl_121694 The line "She stands hard as a stone" means that she wont be moved. The line "An angel girl with an upturned face" refers to the fact that someone with such innocence deserves to smile, but this girls smile was upturned by the cruelty of the world we live in. Great, now i have tears on my laptop from writing this. It is such a sad song.

The ending is pretty grim. It's odd that people are missing what that verse means.

"An angel girl with an upturned face" is referring to a special headstone usually at the graves of children...

Hence the prior verse "in the morning it'll be too late".

Very Sad and Beautiful song with the motif of abuse that is found in many of Martina McBride's songs. I first heard this on my way to my senior prom. I saw the video a week later and cried. Very beautiful, very sad

I've always been a fan of Martina, and when i heard that there was a university course just on HER. I was kind of confused, i mean she's no historical figure or anything..but as you listen more intently and bring meaning to the lyrics, you really know that a course on her music and video's, relating them to every day life is one of the most positive chances you get.
