The message I get from this song is pretty intense. Picture a volatile relationship. One where it's very hot and cold. "The contingencies of another day unravel my senses". You hope for the best and the contingency of finally being able to be happy with the one you love has your hopes and feelings going crazy. However, the distance that ends up coming between 2 people can be pretty dark and lonely. It can be heartbreaking. The hope you had for that person and the relationship starts to slowly deteriorate by that persons' absence. "We WILL make it" turns to "We CAN make it" and then eventually, it can turn into "Can we make it?". But, the unintentional pain that someone brings to another in such a relationship can be seen as that person's expression of love. That person can be so in love with that person that they fear hurting them so they push that person away. Ironically, the distance itself hurts more than any potential pain felt along the way if there wasn't any pushing. So behind the pain, there is love.
