"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
I'll make my own way
I'd make my own way
Don't bother counting on me, loving me
Just stand back, I'm gone
Oh, this sorry joke
You're a joke
Is all we really need
There's nothing that I'd need
Too late and too bad
I'm stuck feeling bad
Without you, I'm a mess without you
Just don't know
This is really not a joke
You're all I really need
You're all I really need
And I'm just so bored of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind
And I'm just so sick of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind
I'll make my own way
I'd make my own way
Don't bother kissing on me, loving me
Just stand back, I'm gone
Oh, this sorry joke
You're a joke
Is all we really need
There's nothing that I'd bring
And I'm just so bored of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind
And I'm just so sick of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind
I'd make my own way
Don't bother counting on me, loving me
Just stand back, I'm gone
Oh, this sorry joke
You're a joke
Is all we really need
There's nothing that I'd need
Too late and too bad
I'm stuck feeling bad
Without you, I'm a mess without you
Just don't know
This is really not a joke
You're all I really need
You're all I really need
And I'm just so bored of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind
And I'm just so sick of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind
I'll make my own way
I'd make my own way
Don't bother kissing on me, loving me
Just stand back, I'm gone
Oh, this sorry joke
You're a joke
Is all we really need
There's nothing that I'd bring
And I'm just so bored of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind
And I'm just so sick of wasting my time
Love and death are always on my mind

Plastic Bag
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
Midnight
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms.
“Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
This song reminds me of a project I had to do on "Romeo and Juliet" for English class. We had to create a collage that would illustrate the themes "love" and "death" throughout the play.
Love and death are both two extremes... and when they're both constantly on your mind, they plague you down until you get tired of the same ol worries and questions that you're asking yourself. How do you take your mind off of issues that are so intense? You get fed up with it, and you start feeling whirls of emotions for the two different themes that are combined, like they are becoming the same subject.
I love how ironic and contradictory these guys are, they make one statement and then directly contradict it with the next line
"is all we really need there's nothing that i'd need"
Not in a bad way but in a sort of sarcastic and slightly uncertain way
Avoiding death? No way. What I got from this, even the way he's singing it, he's ready to die. It sounds to me like he's only just going through empty motions right now, waiting for the right time to kill himself. And this one girl who he once loved is making it really hard for him, because she's the only thing that's standing between him and suicide. And when it comes to that, he can't decide which he wants more.
xx_sunshine has it closest, I reckon. Hit the nail right on the head. 'And I'm just so bored of wasting my time Love and death are always on my mind' They're such huge, arguably unfathomable subjects, how can you even think about anything else when you get stuck in a rut thinking about them? And then you go around in circles because you analyze yourself analyzing love and death, and round and round it goes. How I feel at the moment, not good.
that is awsome, love and death such a good song i love this band more people should definetly listen to them
I think it's about being in a bad relationship and just wanting the person to forget you coz there dragging you down...

When I hear it, I think he by wasting time, he means doing the day-to-day bullshit like working or going to school when at the same time you're trying to have a fulfilling life and worrying about finding love and avoiding death.
i think the song is about this guy that is depressed about his present relationship, this makes him think about dead, because when your not living well you become afraid of dying.
All he thinks about is love this fucked up relationship, and he´s afraid to die cause he thinks he´s wasting time, therefore hes afraid to die...
i think... great song.
I always thought this song was about the singer being hrt because of someone he loved and that making him want to die hence the "Don't bother counting on me, loving me..." and I also thought the lyrics was "jus act like I'm gone."
