In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Hail to the light that my baby watches me
In the darkness of the window
I can hardly get to sleep
Wish for the hour that
The nighttime soon shall pass
And the morning dew will bring us
To a day our souls can last
Love has a reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
Situation candlelight
Enough to see the bits around you
But it's never very bright
Stare at a memory
You, through the grapevine, heard the truth
It's good to learn from your mistakes
But that only works in youth
Love has a reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
Restless minds, curtain calls follow fanfares
Troubled hearts, just a walk down the hall
Restless hearts, you take a punch just to land one
Troubled minds, it's only fair after all
Mounting, the trail, but you've got it in sight
Sometimes the only way is jumping
I hope you're not afraid of heights
Reach in my pocket for a bill that isn't there
And to face all of the undoings
Still isn't more than I can bear
Love has a reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
Giving love
Love, love
It's always been good to me
It's always been good to me
Love has reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
In the darkness of the window
I can hardly get to sleep
Wish for the hour that
The nighttime soon shall pass
And the morning dew will bring us
To a day our souls can last
Love has a reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
Situation candlelight
Enough to see the bits around you
But it's never very bright
Stare at a memory
You, through the grapevine, heard the truth
It's good to learn from your mistakes
But that only works in youth
Love has a reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
Restless minds, curtain calls follow fanfares
Troubled hearts, just a walk down the hall
Restless hearts, you take a punch just to land one
Troubled minds, it's only fair after all
Mounting, the trail, but you've got it in sight
Sometimes the only way is jumping
I hope you're not afraid of heights
Reach in my pocket for a bill that isn't there
And to face all of the undoings
Still isn't more than I can bear
Love has a reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love
Giving love
Love, love
It's always been good to me
It's always been good to me
Love has reason
There's a meaning to the world
We're giving love

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield

I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example:
"'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
This song is beautiful. It is saying that love is the main reason for living. I think it is also alluding to the fact that if you love and have a love it makes everything worth while. It makes life great. I wish I could say I know the feeling...
This is my favorite song on the CD! It is so beautiful. It is definately saying that love makes life worth living. My favorite line is "Sometimes the only way is jumping, I hope you're not afraid of heights"
All a can say is what a BEAUTIFUL song. Best one on the album!!!!!
Great song, "Sometimes our only way is jumping, I hope you're not afraid of heights." Great line, means that sometime we hae to take chances and risks in life, and hoping that you are not afraid to fall flat on your face and pick yourself back up. Or im retarded?
gavins a genius
this is my favorite gavin degraw song. i love the part "stare at a memory, you through the grapevine heard the truth. its good to learn from your mistakes, but that only works in youth". i feel like its saying that a lot of times things aren't how they seemed at the moment they happened, and only looking back can you see the truth to the situation. however, there's only a certain amount of time you can look back and learn, if you get too old then you might not have the time. also, i agree with everyone else, "sometimes the only way is jumping, i hope you're not afraid of heights." is an awesome line-soo true!
Shame on whoever tipped of MTV of Gavins brilliance. Now he stands before droves of teenagers who just fancy him for the time being cause someone practically told them to, instead of appearing in front of a small audience acoustic. This kind of music should not be spoon-fed to the masses by music channels. It shall be found by oneself, to make it associate with a special memory. However, to get to the point, I think this song about a guy who is crazy in love with a girl; hence he watches her sleep and can hardly wait for her to wake up. And some of the other lyrics tip of that he took a chance and sacrificed to get her, and that it was totally worth it. The acoustic version of this song sets the right mood.
To those who say they are upset that Gavin is getting attention, shame on you. With all the crap and talentless puppets on the radio and MTV making all the money, I see it as refreshing whenever anyone who actually has talent slips through the cracks. So he may have fans who are less diligent than you, so what? Those fans don't diminish his ability to write and produce good music, they actually increase it. It costs money to produce albums, and the more money you have, the greater ability you have to express your creativity. I say that Gavin DeGraw is finally receiving the credit he is due. He made it people. And so, to Gavin and all others who have talent and are making the money you deserve, I applaud. I have a dream that one day, it will take actual talent to make money in the music business, and that dream begins one artist at a time. Thank you Gavin for being a pioneer.
very beautiful song, and true cuz love is making everything worth it, the meaning with life is love.. share his feelings :)
this song gives me hope about love. love makes life worth living is the message i get.
beautiful. the lyrics. †he melody. the vocals. everything.
It is about earning from the experiences of love.
MY FAVORITE PART OF THE SONG: "Restless minds; curtain calls follow fanfares." This means that love can be here and gone as fast as a play begins and ends.
"Troubled hearts; just a walk down the hall." It's easy to take a walk down a hall. It's also very easy to get hurt.
"Restless hearts; you take a punch just to land one." Even if you try really hard, sometimes it's just not enough.
"Troubled minds; it's only fair after all." Just accept it and move on. New love will come.
BEST LYRICS EVER. I love Gavin.
