Rock N Roll Lyrics
Everybody’s cool playing rock n' roll
I don’t feel cool, feel cool at all
Send all of my best out to the band
I don’t think I’ll make it out to the show
There’s this girl I can’t get out of my head

what i think all of this songs sums up to is how this album made him feel. love is hell was more like ryan, he felt the album. the "girl he can't get out of his head" had songs written about her on the love is hell eps i'm guessing. the producers weren't digging it, so he sold out in a way. it made him feel like shit, and with this album, he felt like he was betraying her. so when he's playing rock n roll, he's not giving her the proper respect. he feels bad.
that's probably way to deep, but just a thought

I isolated the vocals and can hear in the answering machine recording at the end the speaker crying before each "I miss my best friend" line. Devastatingly sad and haunting.

It's such a different song from anything else on the "Rock N Roll" album. I like the fact that he chose this title for the only piano song on an all out "rock and roll" record. It shows that not all rock is drums and guitars. The song speaks for itself.

I think this song may sum up Ryan's whole experience in making the "Rock N Roll" album. He wanted to try something different but maybe he realized it wasn't for him. Ryan has often been quoted saying that he would prefer he stay below the mainstream. "Rock N Roll" the album had a bit more mainstream feel to it than his previous albums. It will be interesting to see how he follows up with the next one. If the two "Love is Hell" EPs are any indication it seems like it may be back to the old Ryan.

could the song possibly be about his girlfriend who passed on some time ago (--"there's this girl i can't get out of my head"--)? i might be wrong, but that's what comes to my mind anyway. it is a an extremely beautiful but also unbelievably sad song if you listen to it that way.

The only song that's really his on the album. Everything else was inspired from his own rock favorites. I read a review once that said 'Rock n' Roll' was Ryan's way of holding a mirror up to his cd collection, which sounds accurate to me (and explains why the title is backwards on the cover).
But, this song is my favorite, so simple and self-critical. Mr. Adams continues to amaze me.
PS: I enjoy the album more when I put the tracks in this order: 2-4-7-12-6-1-5-9-10-14

does anyone else notice a woman's voice at the end saying "i miss my best friend" a few times? sad :(

I noticed that. I didn't know what it said, but it scared me...
Anyway. Beautiful song. I love it, I can relate to it...Wonderful.

Well, the whole reason Ryan made the album Rock N Roll was because the executives pressured him to. He wanted to leap right into Love Is Hell, but the studio said it was too sad and depressing, and that he should make something more upbeat. Naturally, Ryan threw together this awesome compilation of songs, many inspired by some of his favourite artists, threw the title of "rock n roll" onto the album as a slap in the face to the studio, saying 'ok, look, i've made rock n' roll, it's still awesome, and now can i please release what i want to release?" i think the song rock n roll is the one piece of himself on the album, i agree with davidecoyote. very nicely done, short and sweet.

I definitely think this song is about his girlfriend who passed away. & the very last part of it, when you can hear a woman's voice saying "I miss my best friend" is very sad, I think it's saying that not only was this woman his girlfriend but his best friend too, & that's absolutely shit to lose both.
