This song is focuses on klayton's past the circle of dust era , klayton had trouble back then 95 -96 with The REX Records , he couldn't release any thing for one whole year because of legal reasons and the contract , hence he never likes to talk much about circle of dust.
His project celldweller revived him as an artist , no ties to crap labels , he does stuff his way.
The song switchback speaks about individual or if u look from klayton perspective "himself" making a choice that can be undone no matter what u do or say.

i understand the lyrics, save for that bridge part ("and everybody foolin' with their rick rack, and it's about time we puttin' them on their back ...") and the chorus. the verses obviously depict someone filled with regret ...
