Homecoming King Lyrics
everyone's banging on their gongs
the sooner you leave the sooner
you're home
back in massachusetts
to your golden age where they tuck you in
at night
now who you gonna wave to?
this time you're not homecoming king
sound before?
do you even know where st is coming rom?
it's getting too loud it keeps on pushing you out
into the arms of 1994
now who you gonna wave to?
you're not homecoming king
wasn't what you hoped at all
do you still recall it
giving dead-arms in the hall?
stay right where you are
you'll be half of who you are
when you always would win
so count the days 'til you give in
to your golden age where your crown is
shining bright
now who you gonna wave to?
this time you're not homecoming king
now who you gonna wave to?
this time you're not homecoming king

i love this song especially the line "do you still recall it giving dead-arms in the hall?" it reminds me of my friends and i and when i was much younger

I think this song is about people's tendency to try to relive the past instead of focusing on the future. The message is, basically, that doesn't work. I love the line, "Stay right where you are, you'll be half of what you were." (Which is wrong above, btw; I've got the liner notes in front of me.)
Ironically, tho, this song also makes me super-nostalgic. In 1994, I was a freshman and the Guster guys were seniors at Tufts (back in Massachusetts)...makes me think about all that college stuff.

I agree with gravity defiany that it's definitely about people who never live for the present or future but swell on the past. Like people who think they are above everyone else in real life becausethey were "homecoming king" in high school. Awesome song, hooray for massachusetts.

What exactly does it mean to "dead arm"? I've thought about and the closest thing I can imagine is that it's similar to "clothes lining" somebody.
i thinks its when u punch someone till the arm is numb. its a guy thing
i thinks its when u punch someone till the arm is numb. its a guy thing

is about going back to Massachussets.. of not forgeting where you come from , and when they are usually always on tour it seems they get carsick a lot

a dead arm is when you punch somebody right in the tricep area, if punched hard enough can cause a cramping sensation. same with the leg in the quad area, a dead leg. must be a new england thing. i'm seeing these guys tonight, pretty pumped for that.

Its about that guy that exists in every high school who is like, mr. cool, who is the star football player, homecoming king, etc. and who goes around "giving dead-arms in the hall" and being mean to everyone else, but then when he grows up and graduates he has done nothing else with his life and so his life isnt what he thought it would be when he was on his own.

When they played this at the Keep It Together CD Launch Concert in Boston City Hall Plaza, Ryan announced that everyone there should love this new song - "We even managed to say Massachusetts in it, not once but twice! And whenever we play this song out of state, we will never change the place to where we are, it will always be Massachusetts."
Obviously, that and this song got a hugely positive reception.

This song is basically a big "kiss my ass" to the popular bunch and socialites that he remembers from high school.

I agree with what's been said, that it's about the kids who hit their peak in highschool- the homecoming kings and star atheletes who won't make it any further than that.
