Slip Slidin' Away Lyrics

Chorus:
Slip slidin' away
Slip slidin' away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you're slip slidin' away

I know a man
He came from my hometown
He wore his passion for his woman
Like a thorny crown
He said Delores
I live in fear
My love for you is so overpowering
I'm afraid that I'll disappear

Chorus

I know a woman
Became a wife
These are the very words she uses
To describe her life
She said a good day
Ain't got no rain
She said a bad day's when I lie in bed
And think of the things that might have been

Chorus

And I know a father
Who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons
For the things he'd done
He came a long way
Just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping
Then he turned round and he headed home again

Chorus

God only knows
God makes his plan
The information is unavailable
To the mortal man
We work our jobs
Collect our pay
Believe we're gliding down the highway
When in fact we're slip slidin' away

Chorus

I think the song is telling us that as we work to get where we are going in life, that life is slip sliding away from us.

I think that this song is about death. and the closer you get to reaching your "destination" (aka death) the more you begin to "slip away". and the verses are different scenarios about people who are beginning to slip away, and what they are doing abut it. And then in the end he summarizes that God's the only one who will know the future, so live your life and don't worry about your death.

This song reminds me of my ex wife. Her middle name was Delores and she cheated on me with both a Paul and a Simon. I wish i was joking. I won't let her rob me the joy this man's music gives me though. I put this song on when I work out in the morning and it inspires me to get buff for Christmas so I can find a new woman and rub her nose in it. I have a feeling this song is about our situation.

I am interested in the answers to two questions about this (brilliant) song:

1) Is it the story of one single family? (passion --> marital stagnation --> alienation)

2) How much is autibiographical? I've always felt that verse three must be.

Please let me have your thoughts...

@ShineYouDiamond

1) This could definitely be interpreted as the story of a single family. Initially we see a passion romantic relationship, although there are hints of pain as well -- passion is compared to a "thorny crown", the woman's name "Dolores" translates to "sorrows", and the man expresses fear of losing himself in love. They get married but as time passes his wife starts feeling depressed and wondering "what might have been" if she had made other choices. The relationship falls apart and the man leaves his wife and son. Later, he returns, intending to explain...

This song, in my opinion express how God rules the world and he knows what happens - but I think that it gives a positive message to people NOT TO BE AFRAID to express themselves, to make their decisions - God may know the future, but it is a man who decides of his actions. It is about seacrching something, what will bring you closer to your goal - which u even don't really know what it is - and because u don't have such a goal u may seem to slip sliding away. You make a lot od decisions, which may not end up as u wanted - but u cannot give it up - because "bad day's when I lie in bed And think of the things that might have been ":)

^^^ i agree, you can make plans and they can all slip away, and you stress, but let it happen.

This song is telling us that God has his plan, and what will happen will happen. The nearer you are to your destination in life, and the more you concentrate on it, the more your life is slipping away from you. Its simply saying dont forget to enjoy life.
