Let's get it on!

I think it's been too long
For this to all go wrong
You lost but thought you'd win
I won't try this again

You played yourself in front of me
To save yourself some dignity
And if you die before you should
At least you know that you'll look good

So tell me how's the rest
I'm fine with second best
It's all that I can say
Not coming back this way

For all the kids you say you hate
But now you say it's only fate
So if you die before you wake
I pray the Lord do not look fake

You'll never be ready for me
You'll never be ready for me

So this is how it ends
Redefine all your friends
It doesn't have to be
This way for you or me

You played yourself in front of me
To save yourself some dignity
If you die before you should
At least you know that'll you'll look good

You'll never be ready for me
You'll never be ready for me

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
