You won’t find me condescending at your closed door
You won’t hear how I feel; say you’ve been there before
The holiday’s the hardest time to fill in all the blanks
And you don’t need anyone to show you those mistakes
Wrap yourself up in only math of our world
Fill up the holes in your full heart with details
For all the riddles solved and every puzzle you complete,
Can’t seem to find the pieces to the heart that beats
You’ll master every task, but always by the book
Then log it in your past with risk that you once took
They left you then; they’ll hurt you now
Can’t get too close to you, or you will cut them down
And any fool can play
I’ll raise the stakes with another turn
We risk
We roll
We burn
At arm’s length, you never get hit;
Too much to gamble when you let someone in
My true friend, I’m spewing
And only one more positive
I just might spill some notable insight
I didn’t think before I purged
So here I am, attempting to unlock your closed door
I wouldn’t break it down, because you’d be gone for sure
You might say something nice of me and send it in a card,
Or under whiskey breath, slur kind words at the bar
And you’re sinking me
While you stay afloat in the tank you built
We drop
We never learn
You won’t hear how I feel; say you’ve been there before
The holiday’s the hardest time to fill in all the blanks
And you don’t need anyone to show you those mistakes
Fill up the holes in your full heart with details
For all the riddles solved and every puzzle you complete,
Can’t seem to find the pieces to the heart that beats
Then log it in your past with risk that you once took
They left you then; they’ll hurt you now
Can’t get too close to you, or you will cut them down
I’ll raise the stakes with another turn
We risk
We roll
We burn
Too much to gamble when you let someone in
And only one more positive
I just might spill some notable insight
I didn’t think before I purged
I wouldn’t break it down, because you’d be gone for sure

Or under whiskey breath, slur kind words at the bar

i think the meaning is pretty much at face value, no real underlyring meaning, maybe a little but anyway, this song and the album kicks ass
no this song has meaning...someone whos a fool is cutting everyone close to them down, taking risks maybe because of a gambling addiction. They don't want anyone to help them because this means they could get hooked too. Theres always someone trying to help, youve just gotta unlock the door!!
Ok, I'm going to have to disagree. This song is not about a gambling problem.
"They left you then, they'll hurt you now" It's about someone who's afraid to let people into their life because they're afraid they'll get hurt. So they fill up the holes in they're heart with details i.e. workaholic, and try to define their life with the things they've done instead of the people they know.
More specifically it's about who will not let themself love because their afraid of getting hurt.
its about a poker game
Poker game? Why don't you explain how you came to that conclusion?
Poker game? Gambling? Hardly. It's about a person who got hurt by a friend or a girl/boy friend, and is now afraid to let anyone else in his/her life... That's my way of seeing it. And Joey misses him or her
That's my opinion
This song is actually ray lamontagne.
