you make quite a lot for yourself
one better than you drowns
but it's weighing down
the sides of your mouth
to an appearing frown
there's more to add
than in my doubts

sharpen your overacting skills
to cut through the tension
mark your words
with confidence
selective attention

try and steady yourself
but with one hand down
losing balance
take a look at your hometown
you're a different person now
only one who hasn't changed
only one who's stayed the same

sharpen your overacting skills
to cut through the tension
mark your words
with confidence
selective attention

we get
our points
to appreciate the life you lead
don't rush the days you'll
wish they stayed for one year later

it's a tragic case of bad taste
but it's all concerning you
who truly can appreciate the
mess you've made

sharpen your overacting skills
to cut through the tension
mark your words
with confidence
selective attention

this song is good because it talks about the things that has happened in my life especially when it says "don't rush the days you wish they stayed for one year later" because that was one of the things i didn't wanna do with my friend in the relationship i had with her because i did appreciate the life she lead and it was great. hopefully we'll be one again.

Not just the lyrics...the title is "Selective". Here's the real lyrics:

You've made quite a life for yourself, one better than you've dreamt But it's weighing down the sides of your mouth to an appearing frown There's more to it than it might sound

Sharpen your overacting skills To cut through the tension Mark your words with confidence Selective attention

Try and steady yourself, but with one hand down "Losing balance!" Take a look at your hometown You're a different person now The only one who hasn't changed, the only one who stayed the same

sharpen your overacting skills to cut through the tension mark your words with confidence selective attention

Make it a point to appreciate the life you lead Don't rush the days You'll wish they stayed for one year later

(It's a tragic case of bad taste but it's all concerning you who truly can appreciate the mess you've made)

Yes youlooksogoodinblue has it right... and I love this song... I have this soft spot for acoustics and some of my favorite lyrics from any song ever- "sharpen your overacting skills to cut through the tension" haha I've done that before....

This song is totally my life. I moved to away for school,Something I'd always dreamed of, but it wasnt what I had expected. ("You've made quite a life for yourself, one better than you've dreamt But it's weighing down the sides of your mouth to an appearing frown") Then when I came back to my hometown, everyone and everything had changed, and it was awkward. Its like realizing, life is what you make of it. If you waste time, thinking of how things could be in an ideal world, is just a waste of your life, sometimes you just have to grin and bare it, and make it something positive. I just love EP, it means alot to me. i think its perfect.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This is a sequel to 2001's "Reckless Abandon", and features the band looking back on their clumsy youth fondly.
