In the air
Above a cold lake
Is a soul
From an early
Better age
Grasping for
A mystic thought
In vain...but who's to know
Further on lies eternal search
For theories to lift the gate
Only locks are made stronger
And more keys lost as logic fades
In the pool of dreams the water darkens
For the soul that's tired of search
As years pass by
The aura drops
As less and less
Feelings touch
Has won too much
The hopeless soul keeps mating

General CommentIt's about the downfall of humanity, how we dont use logic anymore and make stupid decisions that in the end will fuck us and the earth over. The gate is the answer to a better life for humanity and mankind but it just keeps getting shut tighter with the kinds of decisions we make, it also expels a sense of hopelesness for humanity with lines like "In the Pool of Dreams the water Darkens" "Stupidity Has won too much" "As years pass by The Aura Drops"
Basically, he's saying we're fucked as a race, it's too late to fix it.

General CommentFirst Burzum song I heard. My guess is that "the Gate" is the gate to the next life or level of existence.

General CommentIt's been said that the only way we can cure the human disease is to go back to our primal ways.... participating consciousness with the environment..

General CommentThat would make sense for Varg, considering how strongly he believes in ancient traditions and customs.

General Commentfrom reading what varg has said about this (and he is somewhat notorious for changing his tune on a whole lot of things) this is the 'theme song' of burzum.

there is no hope because all of the things he believes could make the world worthwhile - magic, the old ways etc - have gone, or never existed. to trivialise it, it kind of seems like the lament of a dungeons and dragons nerd facing the hard reality that orcs and dragons do not exist. the world is not as we might wish it to be.

General CommentSo does anyone understand why Varg thought "The hopeless soul keeps mating" was a better line than "The hopeless soul keeps waiting"? He always complains about Euronymous changing it in the official booklet, but I'm not sure what his original line even means.

Song MeaningThis song is about an ancient spirit, within an eager individual, in a modern time :
    "from an early, better age"
living in a dumbed - down and rotting society, trying to find the knowledge and wisdom once carried by forefathers and in the times when the 'soul' once lived, which, perhaps, could help repair the modern cesspit, to no avail. As each generation passes, fewer and fewer people want to / are capable of repairing a broken existence by finding that knowledge :
    "only locks are made stronger",
and these traces of our forefathers disappear more and more
"and more keys lost as logic fades" (keys symbolize the knowledge and wisdom)
so the hope is lost :
"In the pool of dreams the water darkens
for the soul that's tired of search"
and the 'soul' (trace of the ancient past) fades away, and cannot be bothered trying anymore to save the culture and preserve the land and life, because stupidity and ignorance always manages to prevail :
"As years pass by the aura drops
and less and less feelings touch
    Stupidity has won too much"
The land is now completely 'modernized'.

Now, the last line is slightly unclear, so what is most likely meant by :
    "The hopeless soul keeps mating"
is that the (completely diluted and flat, if you will) race keeps breeding, pointing to the fact that our race has forgotten their heritage, and they are but clueless, misguided, ignorant, materialistic baby machines now.

Though the music at the end suggests that the aforementioned 'eager individual' will not stop trying.

These have to be some of the deepest, most haunting and powerful lyrics in Metal. Poetic, metaphorical, properly philosophical. evocative, cold, hurt, angry, hopeful and eager, then depressive, mystical and furious, then flat.

Song MeaningSo you cannot start a new paragraph on this now? Also, ignore the little symbols throughout my interpretation. These were as a result of this site no longer being able to process apostrophes or quotation marks.....
