He's laughing with another girl
And playing with another heart
Placing high stakes, making hearts ache
He's loved in seven languages
Diamond nights and ruby lights
High in the sky
Heaven help him when he falls

Diamond life lover boy
He move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy
City lights and business nights
When you require streetcar desire for higher heights

No place for beginners or sensitive hearts
When sentiment is left to chance
No place to be ending but somewhere to start

No need to ask, he's a smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator

Coast to coast, L.A. to Chicago
Western male
Across the North and South, to Key Largo
Love for sale

Face-to-face, each classic case
We shadow box and double cross
Yet need the chase

A license to love, insurance to hold
Melts all your memories and change into gold
His eyes are like angels but his heart is cold

No need to ask, he's a smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator

Coast to coast, L.A. to Chicago
Western male
Across the North and South, to Key Largo
Love for sale

Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator
Smooth operator

I can't belive as old as this song is it has no more comments than this.

Im thinkin this song is about a drug dealer and how he sleeps with different woman everywhere he makes a shipment, and how he charms all the woman because hes really good in bed.

Listen closely, I will tell you about this man, they call "smooth operator".... He is a western male, and he has many gigs, all of which are bi-coastal, hence the 'LA to chicago, and key Largo". He would like to think he is a playboy, but be careful, it is an illusion that really doesnt exist. This male is late 50's and let's be honest, "viagra". However, he has a charm that can't be denied, but will quickly lose its play as the relationship grows. He moves with minimal space becuz he wants you as his lover to believe that he is very frugal and "righteous'. This, will make you feel inferior because you have been superficial and or as the rest of society calls it "normal" most of your life.Anyway, once he has control over you, and he knows each one of these women case by case, as stated in the song. He finds a home for you, preferably chicago, Los Angles, and or Flordia, whereever he sees you fitting. He will be your daddy, but you, the women will make him millions with all the men you acquire. The problem with smooth operator, is, one, he is getting old....Ive made love to him....he looks older then he is. And lets be realistic, how long does a man want to have such emptiness in his life...." when he falls, heaven help him...." no lie......But I see that the reason he uses these women sexually and to gain money is because he is not that handsome to have a women just be attracted to him. it is the smoothness factor, and eventually that wears off and that is why he relocates them and makes them his babies.....Whats more fascinating about this western male, is that, he has a lot of endeavors, not just women, but i think he should stick with the cattle....They are more up his ally....

    My Interpretation

Having just been dupped by a smooth operator (con artist), here is my experience. This song hits it directly on the head. The smooth operator will tell you everything he knows a woman wants to hear, have her fall in love with him to gain her trust, then try to drain them of all the money they have (all this happened to me except for the last part...he did not get all my money). I'm sure he has more than one woman on the hook at a time so when one finds him out (like I did), he moves on to the next one...just like the music video shows.

    My Interpretation

I believe the video and lyrics are about a Gigolo and Conman with women:

"Diamond life, lover boy - He move in space with minimum waste and maximum joy"...

He lives the expensive life, and gets what he needs without spending much. He lives beyond his means... in the video you can see him dealing with two guys at a table or selling a handgun on the street and something is going on with the waitress and the singer (Sade).

"No place for beginners or sensitive hearts - When sentiment is left to chance - No place to be ending but somewhere to start"... "Coast to coast, LA to Chicago, western male - Across the north and south, to Key Largo, love for sale"...

This is the Gigolo (love for sale); accross the country he has rich women lovers who are just for the pleasure but with risk of falling in love (left to chance).

"Face to face, each classic case - We shadow box and double cross - Yet need the chase"..."A license to love, insurance to hold Melts all your memories and change into gold His eyes are like angels but his heart is cold"

This is the Con-man... he needs the chase, make the women for fall him (license to love), and he gets their money (change into gold) - will leave them dry with no love or money (his heart is cold).

    My Interpretation

Has to be said, the line "Coast to coast, LA to Chicago", while sounding sophisticated and cosmopolitan is actually meaningless. Chicago is in the American Midwest, thousands of miles from the nearest coast! Maybe the Smooth Operator got stranded at O'Hare airport en route to the East Coast. Who knows. Who cares...

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
