In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Compromise it calls, it says come on down, come and break down all the walls
Then evangelism falls, if you’re ready to fight the fight you got to be
ready to fight all the brawls
Temptation sneaks its way in, it says come back around now, what you’re
thinking it aint a sin
Then suffering begins, I tell you life just aint the same when you’re living
in a cold dark frame within.
Now I feel the holy, Holy Spirit calling.
And I feel my worldly, worldly flesh is stalling
Get up, Word up, Speak up, Get up
Back along a little while,
I thought it’d be all right to let my eyes and my mind run it wild
But after while my smile, was watered down with the tears of my eyes
And the pain that came with reclaiming this child.
